This book is primarily focused on the post-pandemic Gen Z and Millennial business opportunities, most of which didn't even exist a generation ago.No one will forget the year 2020.The year that a pandemic shut down social, work, and public contact. There are two particular changes that have had a pronounced effect on business and finance, which this book will provide the guidance currently lacking in traditional business school texts. The first is the change from commuting to work to sheltering-in-place, with students and professionals on videoconferencing apps such as Zoom. Likely a lasting change, we can expect many office spaces will remain empty and many businesses will stick with the new work-from-home change. The second change is that the younger generation is the first to suffer a setback in terms of the standard of living compared to their parents. Not only do more than half of Americans have less than $1,000 in savings, but they eschew traditional corporate cubicles, preferring instead to juggle multiple and new 'hustles and side gigs.'This book is primarily focused on the post-pandemic Gen Z and Millennial business opportunities, most of which didn't even exist a generation ago.

Today, more than ever, entrepreneurs create new start-ups based on original ideas or technical and scientific developments that often have their origins in an academic environment. Very often these entrepreneurs are also young people with little to no business experience, coming with their technical or scientific breakthrough ideas out of an academic environment. This fact makes it challenging for these start-ups to succeed. When one is used to an academic environment, one finds it challenging to adapt to a business environment. And having little to no real business experience only makes the process of adapting more difficult. While passion and drive are certainly present in start-ups, they can be counterproductive if not used in the right way. Even the large multinational companies were once small start-ups and scale-ups. That they are big and important today can only be explained by the fact that as start-ups and scale-ups they did the right things. For many years, the author has been very close to such situations and has been in charge of leading the growth of new business initiatives. His experience shows that business failure is more often the result of lacking the business skills to bring new products to market than a matter of the quality of the new products and developments. Growing Start-Up and Scale-Up Activities into a Successful Business is useful for every entrepreneur-founder-CEO of a start-up or a scale-up and, by extension, every person who has as part of his or her role the task of growing a new business into a successful business. This book is even for venture capitalists who want to help the companies in which they have invested. Unlike the many books that give advice on how to grow a start-up or scale-up into a successful business, which are very often written by people coming from an academic background or by people who have not themselves experienced the challenges of having to do this on a daily basis, Growing Start-Up and Scale-Up Activities into a Successful Business is based on forty-three years of experience with the author actively working on a daily basis to face the challenge of growing new businesses into success. What also makes Growing Start-Up and Scale-Up Activities into a Successful Business unique is that the principles put forward are illustrated by more than forty-five (anonymized) real-life cases. If you would like consulting advice with a hands-on approach from an author who has always had both feet planted firmly in everyday management at the international level for growing new business initiatives into successful enterprises, then Growing Start-Up and Scale-Up Activities into a Successful Business is the right choice for you.

Most of the founder stories we hear are the successful ones-the ones with happy endings. This is not that kind of story. Being a founder comes with only one guarantee: at times, the obstacles will be so absurdly difficult they will seem almost comical. While you can't predict what's ahead, you can prepare for it. And you can learn a lot from Lynsie Campbell's experiences since she's survived everything a startup can throw at you. In This Better Work, Lynsie Campbell shares the true stories of her fifteen-year journey through the hyper-masculine tech startup world-the good, the bad, and the ugly. Learn how she raised millions in venture capital funding, hired for every startup role, braved two accelerators, experienced one successful exit, and burned one startup to the ground. Was the journey everything she thought it would be? Absolutely not. It rarely is. But it did generate priceless advice that can help other startup founders make better decisions-and avoid some horrible mistakes.

Technology entrepreneurship has been receiving growing importance as an effective instrument to promote national economic growth, both from empirical researchers and policymakers. India has emerged as the third largest base for high-tech start-ups in the world. Although there is a surge in start-up creation rates in India, little is known about factors required for these start-ups to survive, sustain and grow into large enterprises, particularly in the context of emerging economies like India. This book reviews the entrepreneurial, firm-specific and external environment-specific aspects that influence the key lifecycle stages of high-tech start-ups and identifies the key factors that influence each milestone. Existing literature in this subject has limited studies on the structure of the high-tech start-up sector and processes and strategies adapted by them. This book aims to address this gap, analyzing case studies and empirical data, and provides a multidimensional framework to understand the life cycle of high-tech start-ups.

From reviews of the first edition:A succinct and informed account of [Flagler's] leadership in transforming Florida's economy.--American Historical ReviewAn important contribution to the understanding of Standard Oil's extended partnership and how the personal desire of Flagler led to the early development of Florida's Atlantic Coast.--The HistorianHenry M. Flagler (1830-1913), the ambitious Gilded Age tycoon who designed and built much of Florida's fashionable east coast, rode to success on the rails. As John D. Rockefeller's closest adviser in the 1870s, Flagler helped assemble the Standard Oil empire. In this thoroughly researched biography, Akin shows that Flagler understood early in his career that cheap freight rates determined industrial profits. Portraying Flagler as an aggressive entrepreneur, Akin documents his shrewd negotiations to obtain reduced rates, rebates, and drawbacks from the railroads, thus assuring Standard Oil's national domination over oil transportation costs. Flagler drove himself as hard as he drove a bargain, obsessed with the desire to create a monument to himself that he called my domain. His legacy was no less than modern Florida. In 1885, at the age of fifty-five, he turned his attention away from Standard Oil and began construction of the Ponce de Leon luxury hotel in St. Augustine, the city where he had honeymooned with his second wife. Realizing he could never fill its rooms unless better transportation with the North was available, he embarked on the second railroad venture of his lifetime, creation of the Florida East Coast Railway. Flagler's resort empire eventually included The Breakers in Palm Beach and the Royal Palm in Miami; his Atlantic coast railroad extended all the way to Key West, an engineering achievement that was called the eighth wonder of the world. By the beginning of the twentieth century, Flagler dominated not just the resort and railroad industries in Florida but steamship and agricultural operations, too. Florida politicians gave his projects preferential treatment, even changing the state's divorce law so he could marry for a third time. Woven into this biography are details about Flagler's family, personality, three marriages, alienation from his only son, and devotion to the Presbyterian church--copy that fueled society gossip columns from New York to Palm Beach for decades.Edward N. Akin, author of Mississippi: An Illustrated History and other works on southern history, taught at Mississippi College in Clinton. His biography of Henry Flagler won the 1985 Phi Alpha Theta manuscript prize.

Professor Sathe has written this study based on hundreds of hours of interviews with senior managers to help understand why some organizations and some top managers are better than others in fostering entrepreneurship leading to successful new business growth. This book aims at catalyzing our learning from the COVID-19 crisis. Numerous studies have emerged confirming that during the COVID-19 pandemic, crisis management has been far from holistic. Progress previously made towards sustainability has in many cases been reversed and global inequality has grown. This volume scrutinizes the crucial role of businesses in the lived experience of the COVID-19 pandemic and calls for a new goal system in business, establishing human dignity as the ultimate outcome of sound business. Part of the Humanism in Business Series, this book brings together a group of international experts to consolidate the lessons to be learnt from the pandemic and how it was handled. It explores the foundations of the crisis, before focusing on selected sectors and regions for analysis and, finally, drawing conclusions according to the principles of humanistic crisis management. It will be of great interest to scholars and students of business ethics, as well as policy-makers, professionals and all those who practice humanistic management.
