This open access book examines collaborative approaches to urban transformation processes and guides smart co-design applications in such contexts. It presents a selection of co-design methods that can be fruitfully integrated with mobile applications, focusing on the CitySense app, the result of two H2020 European Projects. This innovative solution favours a virtuous co-creation process involving decision-makers, architects, developers, and citizens. It provides a service for assessing the existing urban context and possible design solutions from the community perspective. It enables the study of citizens' perceptions by pairing Augmented and Virtual Reality with the "Experiential Environmental Impact Assessment: exp-EIA©" method, which integrates psychological and architectural perspectives. This approach shapes all phases of the design process, encouraging evidence-based design and decision-making, and also supports the definition of a proper design brief before investing and the pre-assessment of the urban design project's experiential outcomes before construction. The book starts by presenting the evolution of citizens' involvement from traditional to smart solutions, and then provides a general framework of co-design options using smart applications (especially the CitySense app). The overall approach fosters a phygital (physical + digital) approach by outlining possible ways of enhancing fruitful public/private collaborations with a view to making shared, high-performance urban decisions.

Corporate acquisition is a popular way for firms to grow and obtain innovative resources. However, we know little about why acquirers choose one firm over another. We capture the influence of similarity and complementarity between acquirers¿ and target firms¿ products (current innovative value) and R&D pipelines (future innovative value) on whether a particular target firm is acquired. Insights from the Pharmaceutical industry reveal that acquirers value similarity and complementarity in target firms differently, based on whether the comparison being made is with respect to their products or their R&D pipelines. Regarding their R&D pipelines, acquirers prefer that the target firm has similar, rather than complementarity, resources. However, the opposite is true concerning their own products: acquirers prefer that the target firm has complementarity, versus similar, resources.

This book is for ambitious, high-achieving women leaders, entrepreneurs, aspiring entrepreneurs, and corporate leaders ready to move to the next level. It is a manifesto and call to action for women to lift themselves and each other up by refusing to accept limitations and instead embracing an ethos of possibility. There are big gorgeous goals that we all need to set. These are so different from goals that we know we can accomplish because they feel safe and tidy. These goals scare us; they keep us up at night-because we fear they are beyond our grasp. We all know women who are great at achieving big gorgeous goals. How do they do it? What allows them to reach outward, upward, and think expansively? The book explores the possibilities that open when we set big gorgeous goals, and the common characteristics in the women who move towards these.Through stories and lessons, the book shows women leaders how thinking beyond habitual limits allows us to surpass our current levels of success. It includes Julie's personal story of becoming a founder of an unexpectedly and wildly successful children's labels company that started in one of the founders' basement and was eventually sold at an eight-figure price. And it tells the story of what happened next, when having hit a business high, she found herself at an inflection point, where she needed to draw on different resources to find a new path to success. Julie Ellis shares the lessons she has learned as an entrepreneur and those of several other women entrepreneurs she interviewed for the book. Their experiences impart to readers the qualities that allow us to thrive as women in business, to healthily, sustainably integrate the work of leadership into their larger lives as mothers, caregivers, partners, dreamers and so much more...

The 2008 financial crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic have made the authorities to increasingly turn inward and use ethnocentrism, protectionism, and top-down approaches to guide policy on trade, competition, and industrial development. The continuing aftereffects of such policies range from the rise and seeming success of authoritarian states, rise of populist and protectionist trends, and evolving academic agendas inspiring the reemergence of top-down industrial policies across the world. This open access edited volume contains contributions from over 30 scholars with expertise in economics, innovation, management, and economic history. The chapters offer unique theoretical and empirical contributions discussing topics such as how industrial policies affect risk, incentives, and information for investments. They also address the policy perspectives on new technologies such as AI and its implications for market entry, the role for independent entrepreneurship in increasingly regulated markets, and whether governments should focus on market interventions or institutional capacity-building. Questioning the Entrepreneurial State initiates a much sought-after debate on the notion of an Entrepreneurial State. It discusses the dangers of top-down approaches to industrial policy, examines lessons from such approaches for future policy design, and calls attention to the progress of open and contestable markets in a sound economy and society. "Creative destruction, innovation and entrepreneurship are at the core of economic growth. The government has a clear role, to provide the basic fabric of a dynamic society, but industrial policy and state-owned companies are the boulevard of broken dreams and unrealized visions. This important message is convincingly stated in Questioning the Entrepreneurial State."Anders Borg, former Minister of Finance, Sweden"Misreading the dynamism of American entrepreneurship, European intellectuals and policy makers have embraced a dangerous fantasy: catching up requires constructing an entrepreneurial state. This book provides a vital antidote: The entrepreneur comes first: The state may support. It cannot lead."Amar Bhidé, Thomas Schmidheiny Professor of International Business, Tufts University "This important new book subjects the emergence of the entrepreneurial state, which reflects a shift in the locus of entrepreneurship from the individual to the public sector, to the scrutiny of rigorous analysis. The resulting concerns, flaws and biases inherent in the entrepreneurial state exposed are both alarming and sobering. The skill and scholarly craftsmanship brought to bear in this crucial analysis is evident throughout the book, along with the even, but ultimately consequential thinking of the authors. A must read for researchers and thought leaders in business and policy."David Audtretsch, Distinguished Professor, Ameritech Chair of Economic Development, Indiana University
