  • - Facets of my Family Life
    av Wb Carr
    174

APART POSSIBLY FROM MEMBERS, WHO WOULD WANT TO READ ABOUT THE CARR FAMILY EXPERIENCE? MY DOUBTS ASSAILED. Gradually a more positive mind set took over as I concluded that most of us experience the framing, sustaining, in some cases maiming, events we call life within the context of the family stage and drama: Schooldays, Marriage, Offspring, Separation, Births and Deaths. To smooth the reader's journey a simplified Carr family tree has been included but it is in awareness of the above great commonality that these poems are offered, in hope they bring caring and sharing to others.

  • av Valentijn Hoogenkamp
    224,-

A queer memoir that takes place at the messy intersection between gender and desire, challenging stereotypes and embracing the nuance of identity. When Valentijn must undergo a mastectomy because of a gene defect, he makes the decision not to have implants and adopts an in-between gender identity that feels more natural. He shaves his head and discards his wardrobe of women's clothes, even the perfect dress his mother was so fond of. But all of this causes friction: not only are Valentijn's doctors stumped, but friends, family, and lovers too. His trans ex helps him feel more comfortable in his new guise--not a girl, not a boy, but an antiboy--while his boyfriend draws away from the relationship. Encircled by grief and loss, Valentijn searches for the ultimate freedom to be allowed to be himself and tries to rebuild the relationships with those around him. A refined, poetic autobiographical essay about adopting a new and truer identity, Antiboy is poignant without ever being sentimental. Valentijn finds new emotional depth and complexity in his personal relationships, providing readers with a rich and empathetic reading experience. Antiboy goes beyond the author's own journey, becoming a nuanced exploration of human connections amid transformation.

  • - An Ethno-Memoir
    av Tobie Nathan
    292,-

A stirring memoir of exile and self-discovery by a central figure in ethno-psychiatry. In To Sit on the Earth, pioneering ethno-psychiatrist Tobie Nathan charts his intellectual and emotional journey, from his youthful infatuation with Freud and Wilhelm Reich to his mature adoption of anthropologist Georges Devereux's ethnographic approach to psychoanalysis. Expelled from Egypt as a Jew in 1956 when he was just a boy, Nathan spent his formative years on the outskirts of Paris. Caught up in situationist and Marxist politics, he enthusiastically participated in the revolutionary Events of May 1968. He then settled into a distinguished career as a writer, professor, and founding director of a free ethno-psychiatry clinic serving migrant populations in the French capital. Along the way, Nathan's field research and practice took him to Benin, Burundi, and Brazil, where he sought out sorcerers, shamans, and other indigenous healers. As he did so, he encountered telling echoes of his ancestors' age-old practices in Judeo-Arab Cairo. Combining case histories and theoretical reflections with personal and familial anecdotes, while engaging with contemporary thinkers--including Sartre, Lacan, Bourdieu, and Foucault--this multi-layered, genre-defying memoir invites us to reconsider the beliefs that connect us to others and ourselves. To Sit on the Earth lays out a subtle, compelling case for the theological and cultural diversity essential to a thriving modernity.

Before you were created or conceived in your mother's womb, the heavenly father knew the plans he had for your life. There's a process you must follow before you realize your purpose here in the land of the living. It doesn't matter what your racial or social background is, whether black, white, Caucasian, Hispanic, rich or poor, we're all born with a purpose. In My Pathway to Purpose, author Dr. Barbara Butterfield-Jervis narrates her story about finding her purpose and offers ways to help you discover yours. She believes that when we face difficult and trying times, God prepares us to help someone else going through what we experienced. Or, as incredible as it seems, what we're presently going through. He prepares and strengthens us daily. In this memoir, Butterfield-Jervis shares that though she still faces difficulties and trials, God helps her through them all. • - Northern Vermont, 1970s
    av Bob Verneuille
    219

A long-ago walk on Lucas Brook remembered . . . a time when life was unambiguous . . . the certainty of youth . . . a path followed . . . discovery . . . the betrayal of false friends . . . a certainty eroded. Sometimes, reaching back far enough to a time of certainty can help you understand who you are in the present, and maybe who you're not. At times I felt as though I was in the mindset of my earlier self and at others like a stranger in a strange land. Was it a dream; a reality; a butterfly or a man? This story is about the end of an era, as viewed through the lives of a few Long Island youths living on a mountain at the end of Vermont"s communal movement. There, they chance upon a historical discovery, find an unknown old-growth forest and encounter the world's largest cannon-so this a historical novel. But these tales are based on memories and are as accurate as four-decade-old memories can be. Remembrances although culled over several years, are rarely stored in volumes; they are just snippets, sometimes triggering new memories. Maybe this is a memoir. Yet as memories fill in, the influence of a muse is not always clear, as descriptive fiction is added linking it all together. I confess a small portion has been influenced by extreme creative license. So, perhaps this is a straight-up fiction. Especially since all of the names have been changed. Besides some fiction will provide cover for those who want it. Either way, enjoy the ride.

This book is the story of an epic journey around Australia undertaken by two adventurous British seniors, Michael and Dawn Franklin-Harris. Their inherent love of nature and wildlife, the people, and the vast sweep of natural history, is plainly obvious in this recorded account of travels in this fascinating country. The duration of the tours described in the book covers four months and six months, coinciding with two consecutive English winters. They were to drive close to 20,000 km in the 10 months they were in Australia, covering north to south and east to west, on this large and varied continent. They were told afterwards by many locals that they had seen more of Australia than many Australians would see in their lifetime. Despite their age, their past life and experiences had made them eminently suited to take on and record such a journey. Dawn had left England in late 1963 with her first husband and young family on an assisted passage scheme to arrive in Australia in 1964. They spent eight years moving around following the work, periodically returning to their base in Queensland where they settled for a time before finally returning to the U.K. Her love of the country and its people never left her, and she always longed to return under different circumstances to her first experience. With Michael retired, that opportunity presented itself. Michael had been a Precision Service Engineer, driving on average 35,000 miles per year, both in the U.K. and abroad. Like Dawn, he had a passion for life and new experiences. With his deep interest in literature, he was no stranger to the written word and had published many essays in the U.K., France, and the U.S.A.

A childhood experience, from the 1940s post-war infant years to the raging 1950s. My mother told me that I had actually come into the world with a bang. It happened during one very early morning in 1943 when German bombers were flying overhead, and the spent rounds of anti-aircraft bullets were clattering on the tiled roof above her. Dad also said that he could hear bombs dropping somewhere between Edinburgh and Glasgow. So, it seems that I had come into the world with a bang! A few years later, I was to enter another experience: the teenage years.

    av Christian Cooper
    226

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - Central Park birder Christian Cooper takes us beyond the viral video that shocked a nation and into a world of avian adventures, global excursions, and the unexpected lessons you can learn from a life spent looking up."Wondrous . . . captivating."--Ed Yong, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of An Immense World A Washington Post and Chicago Public Library Best Book of the Year - Longlisted for the Andrew Carnegie Medal Christian Cooper is a self-described "Blerd" (Black nerd), an avid comics fan and expert birder who devotes every spring to gazing upon the migratory birds that stop to rest in Central Park, just a subway ride away from where he lives in New York City. While in the park one morning in May 2020, Cooper was engaged in the birdwatching ritual that had been a part of his life since he was ten years old when what might have been a routine encounter with a dog walker exploded age-old racial tensions. Cooper's viral video of the incident would send shock waves through the nation. In Better Living Through Birding, Cooper tells the story of his extraordinary life leading up to the now-infamous incident in Central Park and shows how a life spent looking up at the birds prepared him, in the most uncanny of ways, to be a gay, Black man in America today. From sharpened senses that work just as well at a protest as in a park to what a bird like the Common Grackle can teach us about self-acceptance, Better Living Through Birding exults in the pleasures of a life lived in pursuit of the natural world and invites you to discover them yourself. Equal parts memoir, travelogue, and primer on the art of birding, this is Cooper's story of learning to claim and defend space for himself and others like him, from his days at Marvel Comics introducing the first gay storylines to vivid and life-changing birding expeditions through Africa, Australia, the Americas, and the Himalayas. Better Living Through Birding recounts Cooper's journey through the wonderful world of birds and what they can teach us about life, if only we would look and listen.

    - A Story of Friendship, Madness, and the Tragedy of Good Intentions
    av Jonathan Rosen
    175,-

Named a Top 10 Best Book of the Year by The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Atlantic, Slate, and People One of Barack Obama's Favorite Books of 2023 "Brave and nuanced...an act of tremendous compassion and a literary triumph." --The New York Times "Immensely emotional and unforgettably haunting." --Wall Street JournalAcclaimed author Jonathan Rosen's haunting investigation of the forces that led his closest childhood friend, Michael Laudor, from the heights of brilliant promise to the forensic psychiatric hospital where he has lived since killing the woman he loved. A story about friendship, love, and the price of self-delusion, The Best Minds explores the ways in which we understand--and fail to understand--mental illness. When the Rosens moved to New Rochelle in 1973, Jonathan Rosen and Michael Laudor became inseparable. Both children of college professors, the boys were best friends and keen competitors, and, when they both got into Yale University, seemed set to join the American meritocratic elite. Michael blazed through college in three years, graduating summa cum laude and landing a top-flight consulting job. But all wasn't as it seemed. One day, Jonathan received the call: Michael had suffered a serious psychotic break and was in the locked ward of a psychiatric hospital. Diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, Michael was still in the hospital when he learned he'd been accepted to Yale Law School, and still battling delusions when he decided to trade his halfway house for the top law school in the country. He not only managed to graduate, but after his extraordinary story was featured in The New York Times, sold a memoir for a large sum. Ron Howard bought film rights, completing the dream for Michael and his tirelessly supportive girlfriend Carrie. But then Michael, in the grip of an unshakeable paranoid fantasy, stabbed Carrie to death with a kitchen knife and became a front-page story of an entirely different sort. The Best Minds is Jonathan Rosen's brilliant and heartbreaking account of an American tragedy. It is a story about the bonds of family, friendship, and community; the promise of intellectual achievement; and the lure of utopian solutions. Tender, funny, and harrowing by turns, at times almost unbearably sad, The Best Minds is an extreme version of a story that is tragically familiar to all too many. In the hands of a writer of Jonathan Rosen's gifts and dedication, its significance will echo widely.

Vamos ver. Me indagou, Geraldo.O que eu contei na época, agora escrevo no enredo deste livro. Então, Geraldo parou de rir e me disse: -Vixe, você errou feio, Ronan.
