I am the fortunate owner of many letters that my parents wrote to each other between 1937 and 1945. These letters have been compiled into a series of three books. Just Yours, the first book, includes letters beginning in September 1937, when Glenn was in the Civilian Conservation Corps in South Carolina and Nita was a rising high school senior in Concord, NC. Just Yours continues through December 1942, when Glenn was in the Army Air Corps aboard the Ile de France on his way to India and Nita was working in Concord, NC. From India With Love, book two, contains letters written from January 1943 - March 1944, while Glenn was stationed at various bases in India and Nita was doing her part to help the war effort back home. The Waltz You Saved for Me is the third book in the series, My Parents' Love Letters During World War II. This book begins in April 1944 with Glenn still in India. He has not seen his fiancé, Nita, since March 1942 when he first entered the service. Other than one brief phone call when Glenn was still in the states, their only contact has been through letters and telegrams. Their correspondence continues through October 1945, when Glenn was discharged from the Army Air Force. . This book consists of mostly letters written by Daddy while he was in India. Mother wrote to him daily for years, but unfortunately, he had to destroy letters before traveling to and from overseas. After he returned to the states and they married, my mother's letters are included as well, after his furlough is up and he returns to the army to eventually muster out. In addition to these letters, there are diary entries by my paternal grandfather, Boston Harris, describing farm life back home without the help of his three sons, who are serving their country during World War II. Reading this book transports one back to the 1940's and the cultural happenings of the day, including many references of songs and movies. History comes to life as you see the world in that time through the eyes of a soldier from South Carolina and the girl back home who loves and misses him. Although Glenn has not been home in over two years, his hope for victory and the return to his fiancé and family never waivers, as he dreams of what his life will be like once the war is finally over.

Esa tarde, vi llegar a mi padre a casa, como nunca antes lo había visto. Recuerdo la alegría que sentí al verlo entrar a la casa, pero también recuerdo la sorpresa que me llevé, cuando vi la guitarra que sostenía en su hombro y un par de botas con la otra mano. Por si eso fuera poco, también sacó una armónica del bolsillo de su pantalón. Nunca pensé que el destino estaba a punto de poner la llave, en el switch de arranque, de un sueño, y eso fue precisamente lo que sucedió momentos después, de que mi padre se pusiera cómodo en una silla, con su guitarra en posición y listo para tocar. Sentí una emoción que nunca antes había experimentado, cuando escuché la introducción de una canción con el típico rasgueo ranchero valseado: "chun...ta...ta...chun...ta...ta"que el empezó a interpretar, pude contemplar sus ojos y percibir el gusto que le dio, cuando empezó a cantar el corrido de Benito Canales, cantaba con tanto sentimiento que hacía vibrar su voz al final de cada frase. Mientras él estaba cantando, en mí ya empezaba a nacer la curiosidad por saber cómo se hacía eso. Al finalizar esa canción él empezó a ejecutar algunos adornos en las cuerdas graves y recuerdo que le pedí la guitarra, después de acomodarla en mis manos traté de imitarlo sin siquiera saber lo que yo hacía, él sonriendo me dijo " no mijo, para poder tocar tienes que saber poner acordes y conocer algunos rasgueos" Mientras él hablaba yo seguía insistiendo en sacarle algún sonido a la guitarra, pero solo atinaba a emitir sonidos ensordecidos y jaloneo de cuerdas, yo me imagino que mi padre vio el interés que yo tenía, y me explico un poco que ese instrumento se tenía que afinar antes de empezar a tocar, y me dio una explicación de cómo hacerlo, me enseñó algunos acordes en ese rato, también me dijo que tomaba tiempo para desarrollar el oído.

As I watched my four darling children from my wheelchair, I realized this battle through illness had never been about ringing the bell and surviving the fire. I had what mattered all along. The only thing more powerful than fear, sickness, regret, and loss... the only thing stronger than death is love. Nothing could take that away from me. So, whether I died in my 40s or someone created a miracle cure, I needed to discover peace within myself before it was too late. Yet, as I reflected on recent adventures-swimming in Jamaica, fiddling in New York, backpacking across Italy, and skydiving with family-I couldn't help thinking about the irony. While crossing items off my bucket list as a terminal cancer patient, I'd found purpose in the most unexpected places. How odd that it took dying for me to truly live.

On one level, this is the story of my husband's death. On a second level, it is the story of how addiction--my own and that of others-shaped and controlled my life. On the most significant level, it is a story of the power of love to alter one's life and create change-a love story.

I went from a lifestyle of bondage ruled by a distorted self-image and emotions to a superior inner reality, our true spiritual life of peace and joy. I put into practice living from my authentic self-image and reflect that life in my earthly experience.
