    av Arthur Parkinson
    185

A captivating testament to the mutual rewards and delights of keeping chickens, by the Sunday Times bestselling author of The Flower YardMost of us want a dog, or a cat, or a pony when we are young - but for Arthur Parkinson, it was always hens. Growing up in an ex-mining town in Nottinghamshire, the other kids in the playground called him 'Chicken Boy'. The quiet fulfilment of keeping hens became his sanctuary, a tonic for mental and physical health, a connection with his family and the natural world. Illustrated with Arthur's own characterful watercolours and photographs of his 'girls', Chicken Boy is a one-of-a-kind memoir of a life in nature.

Lawrence Hamm's life links the most powerful social movements of the last 50 years. Appointed to the Newark, New Jersey Board of Education in 1971 at the age of 17, he balanced the radical world of Newark's Black Power Movement with a racially-divided city's practical public policy concerns. What were his rewards? Harsh criticism in the press, dropping out of Princeton University, being publicly attacked by the man who appointed him--Kenneth Gibson, Newark's first Black mayor--and an attempted framing on a gun he never had. It's the story of how one man juggled Princeton, the power and contradictions of the People's Struggle, employment in corporate America, marriage and fatherhood, with some days being better than others. His greatest accomplishment was helping to found the People's Organization for Progress, a grassroots activist group that for the past 39 years has been a fixture in New York tri-state area activist circles. From fighting to free Mandela in the 1970s and 1980s to protesting local police brutality cases in George Floyd/Breonna Taylor 2020 and beyond, this autobiography--an intimate portrait of one man who took his elite education, tremendous oratory skills and well-honed stamina and created a transmutational spear from it--documents how he always knew his journey meant nothing without the People.

Fresh out of college, Brandon Harris needs an affordable place to live?a search that leads him to the neighborhood of Bedford-Stuyvesant. Making Rent in Bed-Stuy explores the history and cultural importance of Brooklyn's largest historically black community as it illuminates the experiences of one young man at the dawn of an era in which urban class warfare is politely referred to as gentrification. Bookended by two different breakups, a roommate and a lover, both from the white American elite, the memoir interweaves Harris's story with a serious look at some of Bed-Stuy's most salient legacies. From the childhood of Jay-Z to the disappointing late career of Spike Lee, Making Rent in Bed-Stuy takes account of the famous heart of black Brooklyn's cultural scene. Recounting Harris's own encounters with figures as far-flung as Lena Dunham, doyenne of the Brooklyn zeitgeist who would never take the J train into Bed-Stuy to catch a house party, to Paul MacLeod, a gun-toting Mississippi man who makes a living charging $5 for a tour of his extensive Elvis collection?Making Rent in Bed-Stuy poignantly captures what happens when youthful idealism clashes head-on with adult reality.Blending in-depth reportage and personal narrative, Making Rent in Bed-Stuy investigates the disappointments and ironies of millennial life, revealing Harris's radicalization and the things he lost, and gained, along the way.

  • - His Unpublished Stories of His Beloved Homeland
    av Kahlil Gibran
    208,-

For more than a century, the real Kahlil Gibran has been waiting for you to meet him. Unlocked for the first time in this book are hundreds of his never-published stories of his homeland. Come meet Kahlil Gibran, a proud son of Lebanon. The world knows Kahlil best as the author of The Prophet, the top-selling book of the Twentieth Century. But to his soulmate-friend, Mary Elizabeth Haskell, he talked about no subject more than he did about the geographic region that comprises modern Lebanon and Syria. For most of his adult life, while Kahlil painted and wrote, he fought tirelessly for the independence of his home from the Ottoman Empire. And now from Mary's private collection of letters and journals, many of which have waited a century to be published for the first time, is Kahlil's story of his Lebanon. From hundreds of preserved writings from 1910 through 1932 are his own stories of his efforts to secure freedom for his people, the history of the region and his love of his country. Kahlil's descriptions of Lebanon are uplifting and evocative: "In the valley [is Bsharri] - to the east up the steep hills to Mar Mema - just above the perpendicular cliff is a waterfall - in the most mysterious valley I know. Only at midday the sun shines there for those high mountains on the east. Halfway up the cliff, black scratches mark caves cut in the rock by prehistoric Phoenician folk and carved within by them with God figures primitive and beautiful in the Egyptian way. In the spring, the fields and slopes are white with flowers and the wind at dawn blowing down, goes over them, fills [Bsharri] with their fragrance for two or three weeks in the spring - every day. I believe this is one of the things that make the people of northern Lebanon religious." (June 1911) And his fight for Lebanon was heartbreaking: "News from Syria and Mt. Lebanon are more than one can bear. It all seems like one long, black dream - and sometimes I feel quite lost." (February 1917) For those who love Kahlil, this book is the opportunity to get to know him best: as a son of Lebanon.

The world turned against me. My husband divorcing me was one of the most difficult moments I would ever go through, as my struggles went on, also being confronted with the challenge of raising a child with autism. I chose not to be disappointed and vowed that my efforts would not be in vain. Despite names, labels, and unbearable misconceptions -- including being called a witch -- I chose to stand up for my son's life. The tough times I have endured during many difficult moments shaped who I have become! I have been able to impact the lives of thousands of children with autism in Tanzania by starting an organization named Living Together Autistic Foundation (Li-TAFO) to advocate for their rights and for the services they need for independence - and survival. This book was written to encourage parents (and especially single mothers) struggling to raise their children with autism, providing a message of hope to shake off their dust and rise again to maximize the abilities of those children whom they have been entrusted to by God. May this book become an encourager in your journey and be a source of inspiration and faith; to booster to every challenge placed in your path! You are not alone. I stand with you! God has faith that you will overcome and unlock those potential within your child.

Recovery Happens through Christ is taken from the journals of Marilynne Harrison, an otherwise regular person who found herself sexually abused as a child and exposed to a world of sin in such a way as to bring tears to one's eyes. By the time she was eleven, Marilynne was exposed to drugs, alcohol, and sex; and worst of all, was told to keep her situation to herself. The results of being robbed of her childhood led Marilynne to continue to live her life in the only way she knew, by continuing in the same sins. Finally, many years later, Marilynne makes a dramatic turn to God. He lifts her out of her pit in a truly impossible way. This book covers seventeen painful and then triumphant years in Marilynne' s life. She shares her tremendous struggles with sin, painful choices leading to more wrongdoing, and finally, a real call from our ultimate Savior, Jesus Christ. Celebrate her recovery and find hope for your own recovery, or that of your loved ones. Are you struggling with drugs, alcohol, and wrong sexual relationships? Are you trapped in a sex addiction and can't find your way out? Do you long to understand the relationship between the Christian and homosexuality? Is there real hope for gay and lesbian recovery? Do you feel as if there is no possibility for addiction recovery or abuse recovery? Before you lose all hope, find some quiet reading time and read the story of a lady with all the same reoccurring temptations and failures. With all her miserable existence, she provides hope to those who know exactly what she is talking about when she discusses her deplorable and self-destructive lifestyle. Do not give another moment of your life to yourself and Satan. Instead, allow yourself to be guided by the Holy Spirit to the One who also understands your temptations and is able to finally give you relief. Jesus Christ died for you, just as much as He did for Marilynne and the whole world. Just as He rescued Marilynne and gave her new life, He can surely do the same for you too.We are made right with God by placing our faith in Jesus Christ. And this is true for everyone who believes, no matter who we are. For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God's glorious standard ... People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed his life, shedding his blood (Romans 3:22-25)

Life was different back in the day. Community was vital. Childhood antics, teenage exploits, and the challenges of young adulthood revealed I didn't know what I thought I knew. Through all of this, the greatest influence of my life was my mom. She helped me process the good and the bad. Instead of being one-dimensional live, love, and laugh with the great intention and anticipation of more. As she is no longer with me her words and laughter linger on, and I am emancipated. I learned that the greatest gift of life was and truly is love; unpretentious, nurtured, and existing to be shared with others.

Pasta! Vino! Hill Towns! Coins in the Fountain will transport you to Italy where you can find out what it's really like to live the expatriate life. It's all here in the story of a couple who said "NO!" to middle age boredom and made a dash from a small-town in Oregon to cosmopolitan Rome when the author went to work for the United Nations. In between actually working there were Italian weddings to attend, music to be heard, a close-up with the Pope, travel with the wine club and country weekends in Umbria where the Etruscans still seemed to be lurking about. Nights spent "sleeping" on cardboard, a brush with the Italian medical system, an auto accident with the military police, a fall in the subway, interactions with an excitable landlord, and picking grapes at harvest time all became part of their daily adventures. And of course there were many new friends like the countess with her butt-reducing machine and the count who served as a model for statues of naked horsemen.Unexpectedly taking up early retirement, the author's husband met strange vegetables in his valiant efforts to learn to cook Italian-style. When not struggling in the kitchen he played golf on a course where the rough featured snakes and unexploded bombs and crewed on a sailboat he saved from sinking on the way to Greece.Part memoir, part travelogue to off-beat sites in Rome and elsewhere, you will be amused and intrigued with the stories of food, friends and adventures. You, too, will want to run away to join the Circus (the Circus Maximus, that is). And before you depart Rome, you will never forget to throw a coin in the Trevi Fountain to ensure a return to beautiful Rome and enchanting Italy.

Born in Costa Rica, I came to the US not knowing a word of English. Growing up, my home life was full of violence, starting with experiencing my father's abuse of my mother and siblings to witnessing my older siblings' perpetuate the abuse in their relationships, I had no frame of reference for what a loving, caring, and supportive relationship was. I was exposed to adult settings too early, sexualized too young, and put into many situations that I had no idea how to navigate-and that was all before I entered high school. By the time I was a teenager, all I knew was that I wanted to get out of my house and create a better life. But I always fell back on what felt normal comfortable, which was abusive relationship after abusive relationship. Many dark years, excruciating beatings, and five children later, I discovered that the only way to overcome the circumstances surrounding me was to break the cycle that I'd maintained for so long.My recovery became my journey. It was difficult to recover while I continued the same patterns in my life. I had to go back to the very beginning and unpack the initial trauma and how it continued to affect me for so long. After months in individual therapy dealing with the current and most obvious abusive relationships in my life, I finally paused long enough to address the deepest and most painful scar I carried.

Sanz's story begins in the drug-infested New York City streets of Woodside, Queens, during the tumultuous HIV/AIDS pandemic of the Eighties and Nineties. It offers a glimpse into how a now often-overlooked pandemic impacted Sanz's nuclear family. From her earliest days, Sanz was the easily forgotten stranger, always a little out of sync with the rest of the world-a tough but naïve kid and aspiring writer. Her triumph over illness and addiction includes amusing anecdotes and nostalgic, heartwarming memories. Deep-dive into Sanz's confessional self-sabotage, self-destruction, and the harrowing downward spiral she almost didn't survive. Her never-before-told story ranges from recklessness and impudence to empathy, forgiveness, and love. This book discusses a specific person's experiences with drug overdose, HIV/AIDS, and mental health issues as a result of violence, abuse, and sexual assault.
