An intimate biography of tennis's living legend Rafael Nadal. Tennis is not short on history. When Nadal arrived on the scene in 2005, the record for men's singles titles at the French Open stood at six, held by Bjorn Borg. Almost twenty years later, Nadal has more than doubled Borg's total with a mind-boggling fourteen titles. His record will undoubtedly remain his signature achievement - the stat that will define him in memory twenty, fifty, even a hundred years from now. Fourteen certainly looks like the only major tennis record that will never be broken even if Nadal, a modest champion despite his flashy résumé, rejects that kind of definitive thinking.Nadal has won big and won often on any of tennis's surfaces, securing two Wimbledon titles on grass and four U.S. Opens on acrylic hardcourts. But clay, the slowest and grittiest of the game's playgrounds, is where it all comes together best for his explosive movement and warrior mindset. Clay is the canvas on which he has mastered his choreography, underlining the precision, speed, and raw power required to accomplish one of the most impressive sporting achievements of the 21st century - it is the essential stuff of his life and success.Legendary sports reporter and bestselling author Christopher Clarey has interviewed Nadal and his coaches from his first French Open victory at nineteen, marking his debut as a rising star on the premier clay-court event in the world, to his most recent victory in 2022, closing out an astonishing career as one of the greatest players of all time. Brimming with behind-the-scenes insight into the story of a global sporting icon, The Warrior is a must-read account for the loyal sports fan - and anyone interested in the evolution of excellence.

“A call to action for the coaches, parents, and young women of future athletic generations . . . Funny, honest, and sometimes wrenching.” —The Atlantic“The rawness of Good for a Girl serves as a push to demand that the next crop of female athletes has it better.” —The Washington Post“A must read—for anyone who loves running, for anyone who has a daughter, and for anyone who cares about creating a better future for young women.” —Emily OsterOne of the most decorated collegiate athletes of all time and a national champion as a pro, Lauren Fleshman has grown up in the world of running. But every step of the way, she has seen how our sports systems—originally designed for men and boys—fail women and girls. Girls drop out of sports at alarming rates once they hit puberty, and female collegiate athletes routinely fall victim to injury, eating disorders, or mental health struggles as they try to force their way past a natural dip in performance for women of their age. Written with heart and verve, Good for a Girl is Fleshman’s story of falling in love with running, being pushed to her limits and succumbing to injuries, and fighting for a better way for female athletes. Drawing on not only her own story but also emerging research on the physiology and psychology of young athletes of any gender, Fleshman gives voice to the often-silent experience of the female athlete and argues that the time has come to rebuild competitive sports with women at their center.

Tony Caramanico has lived many lives. A competitive surfer, TV producer, surf shop owner, astute traveler, apprentice and artist, few have experienced more phases of surfing¿s development than Tony. Unlike more established sports, surfing¿s pop cultural adoption began largely in the 50s and 60s. While unfortunately a dying breed, those whöve played a key role in its development are still around to impart their wisdom. Steeped in experience, their stories of a time before surfing¿s commercialization told with an off the cuff ¿you should have been there¿ attitude are relatable to all in search of freedom from today¿s hyper regimented world. With memories rooted in empty white sand beaches, hard yard travel and the endless pursuit of new sensation, surfing¿s OGs constantly inspire ideas of an untethered existence. This book will be predominantly composed of Tony¿s art as these pieces are literal representations of his surfing life. These legible journals will provide a unique window into what the day to day of a traveling surfer in the 70s 80s and 90s was like. The book chronicles Tony¿s surfing youth, features art pieces highlighting marquee works from his thousands of entries. The book contains Tony¿s journals along with photos of his highly lauded 100+ piece surfboard collection. An important aspect of this book will be Tony speaking to his time apprenticing for Peter Beard, his experience living on Peter¿s compound and the direct ties between Peter and Tony¿s art.

The Sunday Times Sports Book of the YearA Times Book of the YearA Financial Times Book of the YearA Guardian Book of the YearA New Statesman Book of the Year'The heartwarming story of the collaboration and friendship between English football's oddest couple, Elton John and Graham Taylor' The Times' A wonderful, feel-good account of an ultimately English provincial story' Simon Kuper_____________________ An unforgettable British underdog story from one of our greatest narrative nonfiction writers, John Preston, and the international musical icon and bestselling author, Sir Elton John.Britain in the 1970s was beset by unrest and unemployment, as inflation soared, fuel was scarce, and hooliganism was on the rise. And for Watford FC, the outlook was even gloomier. Rundown and rat-infested, Watford were an ailing side with holes in their kit and barely enough fans to fill a stand. Of the 92 clubs in the Football League, spread across four divisions, Watford were in 92nd place.Meanwhile, Elton John was the most successful rockstar in the world. With six-inch platforms, spangled jumpsuits, and peroxide hair, he was glamorous, gay, and seemingly a world away from the semi-detached house in Pinner where he had supported Watford FC as a child. Many assumed he would move to America. Instead, he bought the football club.Watford Forever is the remarkable story of Elton John's ownership of Watford FC and its transformational journey to the top of the First Division under iconic manager Graham Taylor. Perhaps most remarkably, four of the same players who had been written off as has-beens went with them all the way from the bottom to the top. Inspiring and infectiously funny, this is a tribute to football's unlikeliest friendship as Elton John and Taylor, a straight-talking former fullback with a love of Vera Lynn, beat the odds and their personal demons to save a club and a community.Immersed in the grime and glamour of '70s Britain, Watford Forever is one of sport's great underdog stories and a love letter to the beautiful game.

Michael Keedy recently wrote an interesting and well-received essay for the Baseball History Comes Alive website about Yankee Bobby Richardson and his historic grab of the hot smash off the bat of Willie McCovey that ended the 1962 World Series. The suggestion was made to him that an ongoing series of essays counting down his choices for the top ten greatest World Series catches might also go over well. Thus was the genesis of this collection of essays now compiled into a single volume. First up in the series was the aforementioned grab by Bobby Richardson which Michael rated at number 10. Next, occupying the number nine spot, was Joe Rudi's spectacular catch in Game Two of the 1972 World Series. These were followed in rapid succession with other essays highlighting great World Series heroics by the likes of Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle, and, in more recent years, Ron Swoboda. What constitutes a great catch is subjective and everyone has his or her own opinions and biases. As a lifelong Dodger fan, Michael Keedy has his; but in compiling his list, he has tried to be as objective as possible. Whether or not everyone agrees with Michael's selections, all baseball fans will find this collection of essays to be entertaining reading. A gifted writer with a unique, engaging style, Michael Keedy's essays will hold the readers' interest from the first page to the last.

In May 2019, the IAAF held a press conference in which they addressed the issue of their self proclaimed "Female Eligibility Regulations". The press conference was meant to offer clarity to those questioning their previous statement in which they had said that "The Panel found that the DSD Regulations are discriminatory but that, on the basis of the evidence submitted by the parties, such discrimination is a necessary, reasonable and proportionate means of achieving the legitimate objective of ensuring fair competition in female athletics in certain events and protecting the "protected class" of female athletes in those event" (site reference - https: //www.iaaf.org/news). This Q&A session left many more confused than before they had begun to try and explain the blatant inability to comprehend the scope of a few athletes' behaviours.
