Born in Dublin but raised in London, Alan Dunne spent nearly a quarter of a century with what became his home-town club of Millwall - and after almost 400 senior games left as a legend. Joining the youth set-up at the age of eight, he rose through the ranks to eventually become a player who epitomised the club, as his wholehearted approach resonated with the fans at the Den. Dunne It the Hard Way is a frank and honest insight into his life with the Lions, from making the worst of first impressions on a manager, to the heartbreak of being told he was no longer wanted in 2015, and plenty of highs and lows in between - including a broken promise ahead of Millwall's only ever appearance in the FA Cup Final. He also explains why his dad told him to leave home to save his career; why he was left to pay a team-mate's dental bills; how he was caught posing with a naked model holding a plate of toast; how the penny finally dropped, before it was too late; how he turned around a career which almost hit the skids to become such a firm favourite of the crowd that he was nearly immortalised in statue form; and he tells the story behind each of his record number of red cards!

With interviews and new revelations, A Champion's Last Fight is an emotional journey through boxing history that examines the struggles many former champions experience after hanging up the gloves - and asks what, if anything, can be done to help the nation's boxing greats adjust to life away from the ring?

When I came to Auburn in 2004, I fell into a gold mine. My coaching career, which at one time looked very promising, had recently reached a dead end. What I found when I got to The Plains was a vast number of very talented but underachieving players with a burning desire to succeed. Together, as coaches, players, and staff, we developed a selfless majestic synergy that resulted in an undefeated season and, what we believed, would be a ticket to the BCS National Championship game. It wasn't to be. After eighteen years, and several other stops, I retired from coaching but found certain memories never retire. The Auburn Tigers of 2004 will forever represent the pinnacle of my professional career. After traveling to The Plains with my seventeen-year-old son, Cole, to watch the 2021 Iron Bowl, I had an opportunity to reunite with many of the players and fans with whom I shared those memories. Upon my return home, I was inspired by their undying enthusiasm for what was accomplished years ago. I wanted to divulge some interesting stories that haven't been told, and offer, what I hope, an enlightening perspective from the guy who accounted for the game plans and called the plays.
Sultan is the official biography of Wasim Akram, the sultan of swing, one of the greatest fast bowlers in the history of cricket. For twenty years, Wasim Akram let his cricket do the talking his electrifying left-arm pace, his explosive left-handed striking, his leadership and his inspiration. For another twenty years he kept his own counsel about those days, full of drama, controversy and even mystery, in a country, Pakistan, that to outsiders is a constant enigma. Until now. Sultan tells the story of cricket's greatest left-arm bowler, and one of its greatest survivors, who was chosen from the streets of Lahore and groomed by Imran Khan to become champion of the world man of the match in the final of the 1992 World Cup. Along the way were unforgettable rivalries with the greatest of his time, from Viv Richards and Ian Botham to Sachin Tendulkar and Shane Warne. Along the way, too, a backdrop of conspiracy and intrigue over ball tampering and match fixing about which Wasim finally sets the story straight. But there's more: Sultan goes frankly into the crumbling and rebuilding of Wasim's private life, marred by the tragedy of his first wife's death and the torment of addiction. The result is an unprecedented insight into the life of a cricketer who revolutionised the game with his speed and swing, and a patriot buoyed and burdened by the expectation of one of the game's most fanatical publics.
What makes HEROES unique is that author Ralph Wimbish puts himself into many of his stories, a perspective we do not often see in sports writing today. Wimbish's recollections of the sports figures he met as a youngster and later in a 37-year career as a newspaperman make for riveting reading. His father was Dr. Ralph M. Wimbish, a prominent figure in the NAACP's efforts to rid the South of racial discrimination in the late '50s and early '60s. Wimbish the writer has some interesting observations and previously untold stories about Black athletes such as Jackie Robinson, Curt Flood, Elston Howard, Tiger Woods and others. HEROES is a collection of stories about stories - sitting with 1956 perfect-game pitcher Don Larsen while watching David Cone's 1999 perfect game is a perfect example. These are stories you wish you had been able to read earlier. Now you can.
';[A] fascinating, colorful new biography... [Smith] writes of a boxer who ultimately triumphed in the most unvirtuous of sports.' Texas Observer Olympic gold medalist. Two-time world heavyweight champion. Hall of Famer. Infomercial and reality TV star. George Foreman's fighting ability is matched only by his acumen for selling. Yet the complete story of Foreman's rise from urban poverty to global celebrity has never been told until now. Raised in Houston's ';Bloody Fifth' Ward, battling against scarcity in housing and food, young Foreman fought sometimes for survival and other times just for fun. But when a government program rescued him from poverty and introduced him to the sport of boxing, his life changed forever. In No Way but to Fight, Andrew R. M. Smith traces Foreman's life and career from the Great Migration to the Great Society, through the Cold War and culture wars, out of urban Houston and onto the world stage where he discovered that fame brought new challenges. Drawing on new interviews with George Foreman and declassified government documents, as well as more than fifty domestic and international newspapers and magazines, Smith brings to life the exhilarating story of a true American icon. No Way but to Fight is an epic worthy of a champion. ';An insightful life study... Smith's captivating narrative suggests that Mr. Foreman is much more than the outsize roles he has played.' The Wall Street Journal ';While Foreman's life has been dissected before, Smith's account, which includes fresh interviews with the man himself as well as extracts from recently declassified government documents, rates as perhaps the best.' Bristol Post
The remarkable story of three Yorkshire cricketers from the Golden Age - George Hirst, Wilfred Rhodes and Schofield Haigh - who transformed their county's fortunes, inspired a generation of cricketers and left a unique legacy on the game. Between them, Hirst, Rhodes and Haigh scored over 77,000 runs and took almost 9000 wickets in a combined 2500 appearances, helping Yorkshire to seven County Championship triumphs. The records they set will never be beaten, yet the three men - known throughout England as The Triumvirate - were born in two small villages just outside Huddersfield, in Last of the Summer Wine country. Hirst pioneered and perfected the art of swing and seam bowling, Rhodes took more first-class wickets than anyone else in history, while the genial Haigh's achievements as a bowler at Yorkshire have been surpassed only by his two close friends; their influence would extend far beyond England, as they all went to India to coach, laying the foundations of cricket in the subcontinent. Pearson, whose biography of Learie Constantine, Connie, won the MCC Book of the Year Award, brings the characters and the age vividly to life, showing how these cricketing stars came to symbolise the essence of Yorkshire. This was a time when the gritty northern professionals from the White Rose county took on some of the most glittering amateurs of the age, including W.G.Grace, C.B.Fry, Prince Ranji and Gilbert Jessop, and when writers such as Neville Cardus and J.M.Kilburn were on hand to bring their achievements to a wider audience. The First of the Summer Wine is a celebration of a vanished age, but also reveals how the efforts of Hirst, Rhodes and Haigh helped create the modern era, too.

The fascinating and unknown story of the Tour de France's ever-changing relationship with money and power - and the enigmatic family behind it all.It started with a cash drop by an English spy in occupied Paris in 1944. Reserved for Resistance groups during the war, the money reached milien Amaury, an advertising executive, who was tasked to help France return to a free press once liberated. He soon launched a newspaper empire that - unbeknown to him - would own the rights to run what would become one of the greatest sporting events in history.Le Tour, once a struggling commercial phenomenon, began to rise in popularity across much of western Europe in the glum years after the Second World War, lifting the mood of the hungry and despondent French. But with the increased interest in the event, exacerbated by the creation of television and the internet, came several cultural threats to national heritage. Multiple attempts to wrest power and profits from the latest generation of the Amaury family - who still own the race and take tens of millions of euros home in dividends - have followed, but not without a fight.Fast-paced and fastidiously researched, Le Fric illustrates how moments off the bike at the Tour de France are every bit as gripping as the battle for the yellow jersey.

In 1936, the celebrated American author Zane Grey arrived in the sleepy New South Wales town of Bermagui, with the express reason of angling for the world's largest fish - Marlin, sharks and Swordfish. Here is his little classic of the chase.Four miles out I sighted a long sickle fin cutting through a swell. Did I yell, Marlin!? I certainly did. An instant later Peter sighted another farther out, and this tail fin belonged to a large fish. I could not tell whether or not it indicated a black marlin. It stood up three feet or more, and that much would make a tail spread of over six feet. These marlin were riding the swells and they were moving fast. The tails would come up out of the top of a swell and cut the water at more than a ten-knot speed. Then they would vanish. It is always necessary to run the boat in the right direction to head the fish off. The Avalon is fast - she can do eighteen knots when opened up - but we could not catch up with the big fellow.
'Women's sports have needed a manifesto for a long time. With Good for a Girl we finally have one' Malcolm Gladwell 'The invitation to have a long overdue conversation for a long overdue cultural shift' Alysia Monta o, Olympian, co-founder of &Mother, and author of Feel-Good Fitness 'This is the book we've been waiting for' Kate Fagan, author of What Made Maddy RunLauren Fleshman has grown up in the world of running. One of the most decorated collegiate athletes of all time and a national champion as a pro, she was a major face of women's running for Nike before leaving to shake up the industry with feminist running brand Oiselle and coach elite young female runners. Every step of the way, she has seen how our sports systems - originally designed by men, for men and boys - fail young women and girls as much as empower them. Girls drop out of sports at alarming rates once they hit puberty, and female collegiate athletes routinely fall victim to injury, eating disorders or mental health struggles as they try to force their way past a natural dip in performance for women of their age.Part memoir, part manifesto, Good for a Girl is Fleshman's story of falling in love with running as a girl, battling devastating injuries and self-doubt, and daring to fight for a better way for female athletes. Long gone are the days when women and girls felt lucky just to participate; Fleshman and women everywhere are waking up to the reality that they're running, playing and competing in a world that wasn't made for them. Drawing not only on her own story but also on emerging research on the physiology and psychology of young athletes of any gender, Fleshman gives voice to the often-silent experience of the female athlete and argues that the time has come to rebuild our systems of competitive sport with women at their centre.Written with heart and verve, Good for a Girl is a joyful love letter to the running life, a raw personal narrative of growth and change, and a vital call to reimagine sports for young women.

From legendary Coach Mike Krzyzewski: David Stallworth was one of the most exciting players in college basketball in the 60s. As a high school player in Chicago I saw him play in Chicago Stadium in a double header - I was amazed! I had never seen anyone that talented in person. Although I knew I was not as talented, it motivated me to work even harder. He did things I had not ever imagined and he did them with ease. He was truly remarkable! From the Bench: Before the 1964-65 NCAA Final Four team all move on to sky hoops, the team is committed to growing the existing WSU David Stallworth Memorial Scholarship to cover the full year of tuition and expenses in memory of All American "Dave the Rave" Stallworth. The WSU David Stallworth Scholarship originated as a way to honor David Stallworth and his legacy and was created by Robert Powers, Robert Litan, Jerry Aaron, Gary Austerman, and Herb Krumsick.
