La vita di Luigi Barbasetti si snoda tra il Friuli, dove nacque, Milano dove avvenne la prima formazione schermistica e Roma dove venne completata, presso la Scuola Militare magistrale di scherma, diretta da Masaniello Parise. Desideroso di riavvicinarsi alla regione natia, riuscì a farsi ingaggiare dalla Società ginnastica Triestina, dove per meno di cinque anni fu un abile maestro che insegnò e partecipò ai migliori tornei di scherma del tempo. Poiché molti di questi li vinse o si mise in luce piazzandosi bene, fu notato dalla migliore nobiltà austro-ungarica che orbitava su Trieste, cioè il più importante porto dell'Impero di Francesco Giuseppe. Questo gli diede occasione di diventare amico di molte influenti e ricche persone che lo convinsero ad aprire un club a Vienna, cosa che avvenne sul finire del 1800. Da quel momento diventerà il più celebre maestro austriaco, insegnando la sciabola nelle scuole militari e ai migliori e danarosi atleti della nazione nel suo nuovo club, ispirando però anche l'Ungheria che in poco tempo volle anche lei un grande maestro di sciabola a Budapest.
