The saga tells of a love triangle between Guðrún Ósvífrsdóttir, Kjartan Ólafsson and Bolli Þorleiksson. Kjartan and Bolli are two lads who are close friends but they both love Guðrún which causes hatred between them and results in tragedy. Numerous ancient manuscripts contain this saga, dating back to the fourteenth century and it is second only to the Njáls saga in the number of medieval manuscripts preserved. And the hilarity ensues, whether it's Mama hitting a neighbor over the head with an old wagon axle, David visiting his first whorehouse, or Mike blowing up his grandmother while trying to cure a dog of mange. The darkly comical stories in The Shaman's Daughter will have you laughing until you cry!The dog was running in larger and larger circles as the fuse burned shorter and shorter. Suddenly old Sarge turned and made a beeline for the house, to get under the porch where he always slept. "He's going to the house, he's going to get under the porch. Good Lord almighty, Granny is on the porch by herself. Good God! Granny, Granny, get away." Mike screamed as loud as he could holler.Granny, of course, couldn't hear anything, and especially from so far away. Plus, she was tied up. Granny just kept rocking, and talking to herself.--from the short story "Granny and Old Sarge"

  • - An Illustrated Retelling Of The Mahabharata
    av Devdutt Pattanaik
    396

The Mahabharata has the privilege of being the longest epic ever written in the world. Jaya by Devdutt Pattanaik is a fascinating retelling of the Mahabharata with beautiful illustrations. But what sets this book apart from the many other versions of the epic is the seamless way the author has woven tales that are well known with little known variants from regional and folk tales. Originally known as Jaya, The Mahabharata has more than 100,000 2-line stanzas. This enthralling retelling by Devdutt Pattanaik draws its readers into the fascinating tale of the Kuru family, the complications and fights that lead up to the famous 18-day Mahabharata War and its impact. He weaves together well-and-lesser-known folk as well as regional versions of the epic including the Pandavani of Chattisgarh, Gondhal of Maharashtra, Terukkuttu of Tamil Nadu and Yakshagana of Karnataka. The book is written in a 108 chapters and abundant with many little known facts like the names of the hundred Kauravas, the stories of Astika, Madhavi, Jaimini, Aravan and Barbareek and the deifying of Draupadi as a goddess in the temples of Tamil Nadu. The author has even tried to date the war with the astronomical data provided in the epic. Devdutt Pattanaik''s Jaya is a book that shows the epic in a new light.
