It Starts When you Walk Through the Door...You immediately realize that this is different, special, and without yet knowing why, you get the feeling this is going to be a night to remember. Then you look around Dan Tana's and you understand. This is not the hot new fusion cooking restaurant du jour everyone is talking about, the one that will close down within a year and never be mentioned again. No, this is a timeless restaurant, a perfect combination of Old Hollywood and new Hollywood...a seven-night-a-week social scene full of stories and secrets.Built in 1929, and sandwiched between Beverly Hills and the residential Norma Triangle, the location was not a traditional restaurant location in any sense of the word, as it was basically a bungalow housing fast food joint with names that changed over the years but whose fare stayed the same: Black Lucky Spot Café, Domenico's Lucky Spot, Dominik's Hamburger Stand. The primary clientele for this diner location were streetcar maintenance workers, on break from the Santa Monica line.But by 1964, change was coming to Los Angeles. Freeways were replacing street cars, the backlot of 20th Century Fox had been sold, and inits place Century City was rising, smog was everywhere, and every year hundreds of thousands of people were moving to LA. Still, the little house on Santa Monica Boulevard looked out over empty lots and vast undeveloped space, forever stuck in time—or so it seemed.Dan brought the location for $30,000 soon after opening the restaurant. It was a leap of faith by both Tana and the seller, given their agreement: a three-year payment schedule of $10,000 a year. In the very beginning it wasn't a roaring success. The challenge was intense competition in the LA dining scene. There were old favorites such as Musso & Franks, Villa Capri, La Scala, The Formosa Cafe, and Chasen's, plus a new restaurant, Matteo's, started by Dan's fellow La Scala staff compadre, Matty "Matteo" Jordan.For the first two years, the restaurant averaged only twenty-five dinners a night. At one low point, Joe DiMaggio stopped by to eat, and Dan Tana offered him 50% ownership for $15,000. No dice. So Tana did something The Yankee Clipper rarely did—he struck out. Scientist and photographer Oliver Ullrich (b. 1960) returns to explore the Cabo de Gata in Andalusia, one of the driest regions in Europe. At first glance, the landscape here appears frozen and unchanging, but Ullrich tracks down the places where nature seems to communicate. Various natural objects, wind, water, and sun interact and reveal nature here as a living thing that can be experienced as a poetic rather than a purely rational quality. The images in Synaptic Landscape bear witness to vitality, beauty, and change in equilibrium-as signs of a healthy landscape. At the same time, however, they highlight the vulnerability of nature and remind us of the threat posed by humankind.

Millions of people around the globe live in Plattenbau. The majority of these were constructed in the second half of the twentieth century and always went hand in hand with lofty ambitions. They were intended to alleviate the housing shortage and to make daily life simpler. Often, however, the planned cities of the future came to symbolize failed utopias. The hoped-for social mixing largely failed to materialize and residents often felt marginalized. Christoph Montebelli (b. 1980) visited four Plattenbau housing estates on four continents-in Berlin, Hong Kong, Havana, and Zanzibar-and through his photographs explores the relationship between aspiration and reality. Free from oversimplification or prejudice, Plattenbau Promenades conveys a powerful insight into these architectural enfants terribles and illustrates the dynamic interaction between local features, visions of an architectural aesthetic, and the people who live there.

Her second monograph with Radius, Victoria Sambunaris: Transformation of a Landscape shares the nuance and majesty of the artist’s practice in a large-scale book format.Based in New York, Victoria Sambunaris structures her life around a photographic journey traversing the American landscape for several months per year. Equipped with a 5×7-inch field camera, a video camera, and research material, she crosses the country alone tenting on top of her car. Her project-based photographs document the continuing transformation of the American landscape with specific attention given to expanding political, technological, and industrial interventions.Part of her ongoing, twenty-four-year series “Taxonomy of a Landscape,” this book encompasses the past decade of work, including collected ephemera that form the essential and incidental elements of her practice as a photographer and researcher. Also featured are archival documentation of experiences and observations on the road, such as snapshots, maps, road logs, journals, geology and history books, mineral specimens, and artifacts.

The Stahnsdorf South-Western cemetery on the outskirts of Berlin is the tenth-largest in the world. Large areas of the site are forested, with more wild flora and winding paths than perfectly trimmed hedges and asphalt roads. Over the period of two years, photographer Anke Krey, driven to find out more about their work, shadowed the employees at the graveyard with her camera. How does the daily confrontation with death affect them? What is their relationship to the earth and the forest that provides the final resting place for thousands upon thousands of people?ERDEN provides a respectful and quiet chronicle of the daily tasks and the complex demands of the work here, which can vary from one hour to the next. Prior to funerals, for example, the workers swap their everyday work clothes for a black suit and tie; the foresters and technicians become funeral directors and spiritual counselors who bury the deceased and offer words of solace to relatives. Anke Krey's photographs capture and condense the transcendence of mundane manual work alongside these ever-present reminders of human mortality with a rare intensity.

Xu Yong (b. 1954, Shanghai) was one of the first photographers to focus on everyday life in modern China, free from political romanticization or ideological whitewashing. In HUTONG 101 PHOTOS, he traces the history of the traditional residential district of Beijing, with its centuries-old buildings complete with rear courtyards and myriad narrow alleyways, the "Hutongs." Many of these neighborhoods have since fallen victim to radical redevelopment and have been demolished. Xu Yong's black-and-white images dating from 1989 bear witness to the rise and fall, the heyday and the decline of the Hutongs against the backdrop of the rapid societal change in China that followed the end of the Qing Dynasty. In this milestone of Chinese photography, which is now finally being published as a new edition in book form, Xu Yong has created an elegiac tribute to the old alleyways of Beijing, revealing both their poetic beauty and the sadness surrounding their demise.

Chile, 1973: on September 11, General Augusto Pinochet staged a coup to overthrow the elected government led by Salvador Allende, bringing a violent end to the idea of democratic socialism. From that point on, terror and repression reigned. José Giribás Marambio (b. 1948 in Santiago de Chile) lived through these events as a member of the workers' movement, a member of the opposition, and a photographer. In December 1973, he fled to Germany, where he made a new home for himself in Berlin. For over half a century, Giribás has repeatedly traveled to Chile with his camera to document a society shaped by the tension between political oppression, painful memories, and possibilities for democratic resistance. The resulting works have been exhibited worldwide and published in many renowned magazines and newspapers. Chile: Memories of my battered country is the first collection of his works, which are presented here together with a commentary.
