Of all of the different types of words in English, people have the most trouble using articles, in particular the definite article 'the'. Most grammar books provide a series of rules that you are expected to learn. These 'rules' are further complicated by the number of exceptions to each of these rules, many of which can change within the same sentence; leaving you to guess whether to use it or not. This book takes a different approach. For a start, it isn't a grammar book, where you are expected to work your way linearly through the text in order to find what you want; instead, it is a reference book, somewhat like a dictionary but in more depth, with a very comprehensive table of contents that allows you to find exactly what you need to know quickly and efficiently. It also offers full explanations of articles and determiners such as: how to recognise them, how to use them with other parts of speech, how to interchange them and what they are used for.Furthermore, it doesn't apply a 'broad brush' approach to the objects of the determiners; instead, it lists around 400 different categories of object nouns with the rules for each. Together with the rules for each object it also lists the exceptions to those rules pertaining to that specific object. These are further categorized into groups - such as places, people, animals, phenomena, food etc. - to make the subjects easier to find. So when you want to know whether to use 'the' or not in a sentence you merely have to quickly look it up instead of having to memorise the rules. Every rule, exception and comment in the book is accompanied by sample sentences so you can see the rule in action. In addition to 'the' and the other articles (a, an, some and any) it also lists the other 100 determiners, including compound determiners (for example 'a little bit of' or 'some of the'), which you can use to add nuance and impart the exact meaning to your sentences. This section also tells you what type of subject each one would be used for (for example nouns, adjectives or pronouns), together with comprehensive notes and multiple examples to show you exactly how to use the determiner in your work. There are also directions as to whether to use the determiner with singular or plural objects, the number of objects being referred to, whether the object is countable or uncountable, whether it applies to abstract or concrete nouns (or both) and what type of verb to use with it. The determiner's pronunciation, in IPA format, is also provided. Pronunciation is an important component of CORE and so a comprehensive set of pronunciation exercises are also provided, complete with the relevant IPA symbols. There is also a new methodology (CORE) explained that will allow you to create grammatically correct sentences using your contexts and experiences. Using this method, you can exchange one type of determiner (such as the) for another (such as a compound determiner like 'many of the') in order to focus your writing. Finally, in order to help you to find exactly the right determiner to use there is a comprehensive determiner selector at the back of the book, which you can use to choose exactly the right word or phrase.
The use of prepositions can appear to be complicated; particularly when it comes to the choice of the right preposition to use to suite the sentence context and the position of the preposition in the sentence. These are just two of the questions that are answered in this comprehensive reference book. This is not a grammar book, where you have to work your way linearly through the text to find the answer you want, but it is a true reference book, somewhat like a dictionary but with far more information. So, if you want to know what, where and how to use a particular preposition in your work (and the chances are that you will because they are so important in English) then you simply need to look it up.Every preposition in English is covered in detail: each having a minimum of one page of explanations and definitions; together with numerous sample sentences.Compound prepositions are also covered, something that is not explored in most grammar books, together with explanations/definitions and sample sentences. The uses of prepositions with pronouns, adjectives and nouns are all fully covered; as well as how they are used with noun clauses - with sample sentences featuring all of the common prepositions each with a suitable noun clause. The book also includes their use in phrasal verbs (such as to allow intransitive verbs to be used in the passive voice), how phrasal verbs are created and where and when they are used..Finally there is a comprehensive preposition selector at the end of the book where you can choose what you want to say and it will show you what preposition to use and how to use it.The book is based around CORE methodology, a system that was derived from research undertaken over 8 years at a leading Asian university, which was designed to make English easier to learn. One feature of the methodology (which is explained in full in the introduction) is the use of correct pronunciation and so carefully designed pronunciation exercises are provided, highlighting the use of the IPA alphabet, together with the pronunciation of every preposition. These can also be used for public speaking warm ups.
If you have ever struggled with choosing exactly what tense or verb type you must use in your writing, then this is the book for you.It was designed as a complete reference guide packed with information about all of the different types of verbs together with numerous examples. It is not a conventional grammar book, where you have to follow the text linearly in order to find the information you want, but it is a true reference book, somewhat like a dictionary but with far more detail. So if you need to find something you can go straight there and see how and why it's used, and instantly apply it to your work.In addition, it lists every tense (both in the active and passive voice) together with all of the uses and examples for each tense (in every person in the positive, negative and question forms) in both the transitive and intransitive forms (with numerous examples of each). In the transitive forms the examples use noun phrases as objects and in the intransitive forms prepositional phrases are used as objects. There are also student worksheets for each tense that can be used in the classroom to allow students to create contextually sensitive sentences under teacher supervision or for self-learners using the tools on the associated website. In order to help you to find exactly the right tense to use in your work there is a very comprehensive and unique tense selector at the end of the book, which tells you exactly what tense to use and how to use it (together with examples). In addition to the verb phrase constructs, it lists all of the current verbs used in the various important verb functions (24 possession verbs, 64 sense verbs, 20 linking verbs, 76 state verbs, 8 semi-modal verbs, 12 modal verbs and 14 subjunctive verbs). In each instance the meaning/definition of each individual verb, together with multiple examples of it in action, are provided. It also covers irregular verbs (together with a list of all 260 irregular verbs) and regular verbs together with examples. The book sections are:Verb forms, Abbreviations, Verbs of possession, Sense verbs, Auxiliary verbs, Linking verbs, State verbs, Modal and semi-modal verbs (including using modals with the perfect tense), Tense, Aspect and Mood, Intransitive and transitive verbs, Irregular -v- regular verbs, Conditionals, Subjunctive and other moods, Question formation, Subject/verb Agreement, Tense meanings and uses, Functions of verb tenses, Creating passive voice (and where it is used), Active voice (with full descriptions), Passive voice (with full descriptions).Pronunciation is also covered, with innovative pronunciation exercises, which highlight the use of the IPA alphabet, and with the current pronunciation for each of the specialist verbs. Finally, there is a new methodology (CORE), based on 8 years of research at a top Asian university, which is designed to make it easier to learn how to create and use verb structures.
