The first introductory A-Z resource on the dynamic achievements in science from the late 1600s to 1820, including the great minds behind the developments and science's new cultural role. Though the Enlightenment was a time of amazing scientific change, science is an often-neglected facet of that time.

  • - Science, Technology, Medicine and Modernity: 1789 - 1914
    av David Knight
    369 - 846,-

Of all the inventions of the nineteenth century, the scientist is one of the most striking. This book brings together the people, events, and discoveries of this period into a narrative. It is of interest to both students of the history of science and to those interested in the foundations of the world.

  • av Jon Agar
    394 - 816,-

    * Much-needed overview of the history of science from 1900 to the present day. * Emphasises the crucial part that science has played in the bigger picture of twentieth century history, from Einstein s new physics to the Human Genome Project.

    | Recommended by CHOICE, November 2019 Vol. 57 No. 3 | Eudiometers were instruments originally devised for checking the 'goodness' of common air. Seeking to be more than just a chronological inventory of eudiometers, this book presents a unique retrospective of these fascinating apparatuses from the end of the eighteenth century to the mid-nineteenth century. By paying particular attention to the experimental procedures involved over the course of the test, this book aims to understand and explore how eudiometers function, to describe the materials used in making them and the different reagents employed in each eudiometrical test. Importantly, eudiometers were employed within a variety of spheres including human and animal health, gas analysis, chemical theory, plant and animal physiology, atmospheric composition, chemical compound composition, gas lighting, chemical revolution and experimental demonstration. Finally, this book looks to redress the existing imbalance in the history of chemistry regarding the attention given to theoretical aspects of chemistry in comparison to chemical practice and apparatus. The few existing accounts of chemical devices written in the past century have not been sufficiently helpful for the understanding of experimental practice in chemistry. Until now no work that deals exclusively with eudiometers and gas analysis from a historical standpoint has been published. Thus, this book will not only cast new light on the subject, but will also contribute to further research on the history of chemical instruments.

  • - An Encyclopedia

This work is a unique introductory A-Z resource detailing the scientific achievements of the contemporary world and analyzing the key scientific trends, discoveries, and personalities of the modern age.

  • - An Encyclopedia
    av Russell M. Lawson
    1 409 - 1 628,-

The first A-Z resource to catalog the achievements and legacy of more than four millennia of scientific thought in the ancient world of the Mediterranean and the Near East, providing a complete overview of the physical, chemical, life, medical, and social sciences of the classical world.

  • - An Encyclopedia
    av Jacob Darwin Hamblin
    1 219,-

The first A-Z resource on the history of science from 1900 to 1950 examining the dynamic between science and the social, political, and cultural forces of the era. Though many books have highlighted the great scientific discoveries of the early 1900s, few have tackled the wider context in which these milestones were achieved.
