Intended for English teachers, this book focuses on vocabulary and language development, grammar and usage, problem solving, thinking and reasoning, and creative writing for use in the classes with students of varying ability levels. This unique practical resource gives classroom teachers, reading specialists, resource teachers and others who teach reading over 200 reproducible activities for building specific reading and study skills in students of all abilities, grades 7 through 12. For easy use, the activities are individually printed in a big 8-1/4" x 11" spiral-bound format that folds flat for photocopying as many times as needed. They can be assigned to individual students or groups as independent work or be monitored by teachers, paraprofessionals, parents, volunteers, or peers. Complete answers for all activities are included in an Answer Key section following the activity pages. The Answer Key may be kept for the teacher's exclusive use or be copied and placed at a central location to permit student self-checking. The sequence of reading and study skills activities corresponds to the sequence of skills in the Reading Skills Check List and the Class Record of Reading Skills accompanying the activities, each of which is organized into two parts. Part One provides a summary of all of the basic vocabulary, word attack, and comprehension skills needed for effective basic reading. This may be used in the reading class or the English class to review the basic reading skills. Part Two presents comprehension, study skills, and creative reading skills that are more advanced or have a different emphasis. Part Two presupposes mastery of those skills in Part One. Both the Reading Skills Check List and the Class Record of Reading Skills may also be reproduced as many times as needed for use in monitoring individual and/or group progress in mastering specific reading and study skills. You?ll find the activities and recordkeeping devices in this resource can be used with any reading improvement program to provide quick, accurate remedial help for all students. They offer a handy, efficient, systematic way to develop reading skills students must have to become proficient readers.
