Sienkiewicz is more than a juggler of genius in narrative prose. This conservative writer knew that no unproblematic representation of reality was possible. The energy of his narratives disturbs narrative order and exposes the heteronomy of a superficially unified style, thus generating fissures, but never ruining the architecture of the text.
The book forms a monograph of the local culture of the old Polish Livonia, practically absent in contemporary humanistic research. It includes historical and anthropological recapitulation of the phenomenon and describes cultural mechanisms of border situations on actual example.
The book focuses on the presentation of basic figures of memory that are present in the twenty-six novels by the Yiddish writer Sholem Asch. This study shows how memory is crystallized in the Jewish experience of nature and in the reality shaped by people, as well as in the reception of the biblical and historical events to which the author refers.
The book provides a panorama of Italian migrants' activities in Polish economy, political life and culture. The motivations of Italians to travel to the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and often settled there permanently, the reasons which made this migration possible as well as the difficulties in their adaptation are described.
The book presents a synthetic outline constitution of the Polish-Lithuania Commonwealth from 16th to 18th century, the realities of political life, organization of the judiciary, economy and defense, coexistence of different ethnic groups and religions, conditions of life, high and popular culture and achievements of art, science and literature.
