Scholars have long argued that political participation tends to increase with economic and social modernization. In this study of Turkey, however, the author shows that rapid socio-economic growth has coincided with a substantial decline in turnout at the polls. His ecological analysis of subnational aggregate voting data for the sixties and the explanation of his startling findings form the core of this up-to-date and comprehensive survey of Turkey's political development.Turkey is one of very few countries to combine rapid socio-economic change with a democratic system. The author demonstrates that in this context modernization tends to increase autonomous, instrumental, and class-based political participation, and to decrease mobilized, deferential, and communal-based political participation. The topics he examines include: social cleavages and the party system; distribution of land and income; geographical and social mobility; access to education; regional variations in voting turnout; urban-rural differences in voting behavior; socio-economic correlates of voting activity and party votes; and patterns of participation among peasants and the urban poor.Originally published in 1977.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. One of the most important mathematical achievements of the past several decades has been A. Grothendieck's work on algebraic geometry. In the early 1960s, he and M. Artin introduced etale cohomology in order to extend the methods of sheaf-theoretic cohomology from complex varieties to more general schemes. This work found many applications, not only in algebraic geometry, but also in several different branches of number theory and in the representation theory of finite and p-adic groups. Yet until now, the work has been available only in the original massive and difficult papers. In order to provide an accessible introduction to etale cohomology, J. S. Milne offers this more elementary account covering the essential features of the theory. The author begins with a review of the basic properties of flat and etale morphisms and of the algebraic fundamental group. The next two chapters concern the basic theory of etale sheaves and elementary etale cohomology, and are followed by an application of the cohomology to the study of the Brauer group. After a detailed analysis of the cohomology of curves and surfaces, Professor Milne proves the fundamental theorems in etale cohomology -- those of base change, purity, Poincare duality, and the Lefschetz trace formula. He then applies these theorems to show the rationality of some very general L-series.Originally published in 1980.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. This book contains the lectures presented at a conference held at Princeton University in May 1991 in honor of Elias M. Stein's sixtieth birthday. The lectures deal with Fourier analysis and its applications. The contributors to the volume are W. Beckner, A. Boggess, J. Bourgain, A. Carbery, M. Christ, R. R. Coifman, S. Dobyinsky, C. Fefferman, R. Fefferman, Y. Han, D. Jerison, P. W. Jones, C. Kenig, Y. Meyer, A. Nagel, D. H. Phong, J. Vance, S. Wainger, D. Watson, G. Weiss, V. Wickerhauser, and T. H. Wolff. The topics of the lectures are: conformally invariant inequalities, oscillatory integrals, analytic hypoellipticity, wavelets, the work of E. M. Stein, elliptic non-smooth PDE, nodal sets of eigenfunctions, removable sets for Sobolev spaces in the plane, nonlinear dispersive equations, bilinear operators and renormalization, holomorphic functions on wedges, singular Radon and related transforms, Hilbert transforms and maximal functions on curves, Besov and related function spaces on spaces of homogeneous type, and counterexamples with harmonic gradients in Euclidean space.Originally published in 1995.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press.
