This is a study of contemporary Buddhist-Christian encounter in Thailand. Based on case studies, it describes the encounter and debates the related issues of nationalism, identity, and concept of the religious other. Thai notions of avoidance and friendship are identified as specific contributions to the wider field of interreligious relations.

The book intends to understand the concept of upasaka / upasika or Buddhist laity in in Digha- and Majjhima-nikaya discourse of the Pali canon. Considered as oral literature, the meaning of the structure and stock phrases constructing the narrative is examined and interpreted from a theory of religious experience.

Die Autorin behandelt die neuere politische Geschichte Sri Lankas seit der Kandyan Convention 1815, der Unabhangigkeit im Jahr 1948 und ihrer Verwicklung mit dem Buddhismus und Herrschaftskonzeptionen der Chronik Mahavamsa. Es geht um Religion und Politik auf Sri Lanka und die Frage, wie das Verhaltnis von Buddhismus und Politik verhandelt wird.
