Der Silver Surfer entwickelte sich schnell zu einem der stärksten Charaktere im Marvel-Universum, nachdem Stan Lee und Jack Kirby ihn erstmals in der Geschichte der Fantastic Four auftreten ließen. Dem Weltenzerstörer Galactus verpflichtet und dazu verdammt, das Universum für die nächste planetengroße Mahlzeit des Halbgotts zu durchforschen, war der Surfer eine tragische Figur. Und doch sah er mit seinem Board unglaublich cool aus. Bei den Fans war er ein Riesenerfolg und schnell schon ein regulärer Nebendarsteller der Fantastic Four, der inzwischen an ihrer Seite kämpfte. Auch Stan Lees Kreativität entzündete sich an ihm, er konnte es kaum erwarten, ein paar eigenständige Surfer-Stories zu erzählen. Nur das Timing musste stimmen. Im Frühjahr 1968 gab Stan Lee dem Helden das erste fortlaufende Doppelheft. Er rekrutierte dafür John Buscema, der seinen grandiosen Zeichenstift bis dahin den Avengers lieh. Zusammen entwickelten sie eine Reihe von legendären Geschichten, mit denen sich die Figur auf immer definierte. Der galaktisch große XXL-Wälzer versammelt sämtliche Geschichten der 18-teiligen Reihe des Silver Surfers von 1968-1970. Für unsere mit dem Eisner-Award prämierten Serie wurden in enger Zusammenarbeit mit Marvel und der Certified Guaranty Company makellose Originalausgaben reproduziert. Jede Seite wurde fotografiert, wie sie vor mehr als einem halben Jahrhundert gedruckt wurde und mit modernen Retusche-Techniken digital überarbeitet. Eventuelle Ungenauigkeiten der damals vorherrschenden Drucktechnik wurden auf diese Weise korrigiert, so als kämen die Comics frisch aus einer erstklassigen Druckmaschine der 1960er-Jahre. Um die Haptik der ursprünglichen Hefte zu simulieren, wurde eigens für unsere Marvel-Serie ein ungestrichenes Papier entwickelt. Texte des Kritikers und Autors Douglas Wolk sowie von Sal Buscema, seinerzeit selbst Zeichner bei Marvel, ergänzen die Reproduktionen, Fotografien und seltenen Erinnerungsstücke.
