Undertaking the classic question of the relationship of Islam to Judaism, Geiger begins his treatment with the intertwined questions of what Islam wishes to do, is able to do, and is permitted to do with Judaism.

"Bei der Herausgabe dieses Buches in der vorteilhaften Lage, von einem vorhandenen Bedürfnis reden zu können, bin ich jedoch keineswegs der Meinung, dass man durch nur ein einziges demselben abhelfen könnte. Es ist dies, neben vielen anderen Gründen, schon deshalb unmöglich, weil jedes derartige Gebetbuch, ob mit oder ohne Absicht des Verfassers, das Gepräge einer gewissen religiösen Richtung an sich trägt und so ganz gewiss nur einem Teile der Andächtigen genügen kann. In dieser Voraussetzung unterlasse ich es auch, mich über Auswahl, Anordnung, Form und Inhalt der Gebete näher auszusprechen, und muss ich in dieser Beziehung das Urteil ruhig erwarten und alle abweichenden Ansichten als gleichberechtigt gelten lassen.Dies Gebetbuch ist selbstverständlich nur zum beliebigen Gebrauche nebenher bestimmt.
