  • - The Cause of Revolution
av Alexis De Tocqueville & Henry Reeve

The book I now publish is not a history of the French Revolution; that history has been written with too much success for me to attempt to write it again. This volume is a study on the Revolution. The French people made, in 1789, the greatest effort which was ever attempted by any nation to cut, so to speak, their destiny in halves, and to separate by an abyss that which they had heretofore been from that which they sought to become hereafter. For this purpose, they took all sorts of precautions to carry nothing of their past with them into their new condition; they submitted to every species of constraint in order to fashion themselves otherwise than their fathers were; they neglected nothing which could efface their identity.

  • - Translated by Henry Reeve, Esq. With an Original Preface and Notes by John C. Spencer
    av Alexis De Tocqueville
    490,-

The first English-language edition published in 1838 and translated by Henry Reeve, Esq. with Preface and notes by John C. Spencer. This landmark work initiated a dialogue about the nature of democracy and the United States and its people that continues to this day. In 1831, Alexis de Tocqueville [1805-1859] and Gustave de Beaumont [fl.1835] traveled through the United States on behalf of the French government to study American prisons, which were renowned for their progressive and humane methods. They were pleased to accept this assignment because they were intrigued by the idea of American democracy. Tocqueville and Beaumont spent nine months in the country, traveling as far west as Michigan and as far south as New Orleans. Throughout the tour, Tocqueville used his social connections to arrange meetings with several prominent and influential thinkers of the day. Tocqueville recorded his thoughts on the structure of the government and the judicial system, and commented on everyday people and the nation's political culture and social institutions. His observations on slavery, in particular, are impassioned and critical. These notes formed the basis of Democracy in America.

First published in French in 1856, French diplomat and political scientist Alexis de Tocqueville's "The Old Regime and the French Revolution" is one of the most influential treatises written on the French Revolution. Tocqueville begins by tracing the causes of the French Revolution to the structure of society of France prior to the Revolution, what he terms the "Ancien Regime". Tocqueville rejected the notion that the Revolution was a radical transformation of French society. He instead suggests his theory of continuity, specifically that the Revolution was not an attempt to change the nature of society in a truly fundamental way, but to wrest control from the ancient, feudal landed aristocracy and replace those outdated institutions with a representative democracy. He makes the important observation that the government of Napoleon was autocratic, strongly centralized, and thus not much different from the "Ancien Regime". Tocqueville was a fierce proponent of social institutions based on freedom and equality rather than on the rigid social hierarchy of the feudal social system of the Middle Ages, a system that was increasingly untenable in the age of enlightenment. Tocqueville's treatise remains a timely and important work on social class, revolution, and democracy. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper and follows the translation of John Bonner.

Democracy in America' is a classic French text by Alexis de Tocqueville that describes the massive societal changes sweeping across his contemporary world. He believed that such developments had transpired over the previous seven hundred years, all moving towards a more democratic system. This text outlines his ideas about how the socio-economic conditions of men were becoming more egalitarian, the origins and causes of which he believed to be intrinsic in factors such as the ability of all men to enter the clergy, and increasing opportunities in trade and commerce. An engaging and comprehensive analysis pertaining to the evolution of democracy, this two-part classic is a necessary addition to every socio-economic compendium. Alexis de Tocqueville was a French political thinker and historian best known for 'Democracy in America' and 'The Old Regime and the Revolution' (1856). He was active in French politics and retired from his political career after Louis NapolÈon Bonaparte's 1851 coup. This edition has been republished with a new introductory biography of the author.
