The Academy of American Poets defines a triolet as a short poem of eight lines with only two rhymes used throughout. The requirements of this fixed form are straightforward: the first line is repeated in the fourth and seventh lines; the second line is repeated in the final line. I came across this style of poetry during a competition. It's short but challenging since it had to convey what I wanted to say in a structured and interesting way... ding ding ding ding ding- ha' ha'. Yes, I like it. I think I'll use a triolet.

This triolet collection is all about textures, from Smooth Ripples to Rough Waters. There are opportunities to observe Sharp Edges and Bumpy Roads, but not before you come in touch with Warm Fuzzies. Did I mention the Metal Springs? I didn't; that was probably because I was stuck experiencing the Grainy Recollections. By all means, come and feel the differences.

  • - Volume I
    av Angela Jefferson
    170

Better Honey (droplets) Volumes I and II describe the aftertaste we have left when trying to satiate a pang of hunger. It could have been a natural hunger to help, comfort, share, understand, love, respect, or be courteous and kind. It didn't matter whether or not the encounter was casual, brief, drawn out, or familial. The enclosed sections confront, not always nicely or constructively, those painful times that may have taught us not to wear our emotions on the outside or expose our hearts as if we were modeling the warm lining of a comfortable jacket. Hopefully, it looks at the absurdity of creating space to store any extra baggage we've acquired, much less someone else's baggage. It examines how we exhaust ourselves experiencing and discovering that we have allowed ourselves to be changed, or maybe where we were fortunate enough to catch ourselves before too much damage has been done.

Hand-Me-Downs and Sweat Pants is a collection of poetry that looks at specific and general contributions of the family tree and what it leaves. These pieces speak of the substance of the tree which lies beneath the bark. It addresses questions of lineage regarding physical features, the balance of spiritual assuredness, and the acknowledgment of truths concerning character, regardless of how unflattering those truths may be. Come explore a family tree through one woman's eyes as she drops, and swings from her ancestral branches of "Somebody Broke My Greatness," "Uncle Jolly, Uncle Change, Uncle Not Sure What's His Claim," and "A Deep Richness." Carefully climb down to the thick, foundational trunk of the writer's own opinions with "The Power," "Sweat Pants," and "I Didn't Give Up, I Just Quit," until effortlessly step onto the rich fertile soil, she's leaving for her own descendants with "To Write What's Left," "The Heart of a Mother," and "A Ripple in the Right Direction." Read, enjoy, and be encouraged to examine your roots and discover your own hand-me-downs. Figuratively speaking, these poems will certainly lead to you discovering the comfort of your own sweatpants.
