Although most early governors did not live in mansions, staying instead in boarding houses or hotels, over time states recognized the need to provide more appropriate lodging for their chief executives.

Focuses on the eleven states of the old Confederacy, and Kentucky and West Virginia, and offers a brick-and-mortar reflection of the region's rich history. This book includes the country's oldest governor's mansion in continuous use, in Virginia, and two built as recently as the 1960s, in Louisiana and Georgia.
