This work engages on a theoretical level with issues in semiotics generally, taking Peirce's writings as a case study through which to investigate the adequacy of a theory of signs to account for the way "talk" works.

Throughout her career, Colette experimented with genre for the purposes of telling stories of her life. The books that resulted, known collectively as her "livres-souvenirs," are far from being autobiographies in the customary sense.
