This book comprehensively reviews current and novel treatment strategies against human parasites, including protozoans and helminths, using natural products. The initial chapters summarize the conventional treatment strategies and natural-product based therapeutics against these parasites. It discusses biochemical tools and techniques for the discovery of natural product based drugs against human parasites. The book also covers the ingenious and innovative mechanisms to achieve drug resistance by the protozoan parasites and strategies to overcome the resistance. It entails mechanistic insight into the modulation of host immune responses to delay or inhibit parasite clearance and explores host-pathogen interactions that mediate immunity against subsequent parasite challenge. In turn, the volume helps in understanding the immunobiology of the parasites and tools to identify candidate vaccine antigens and novel delivery systems against the protozoan parasites. Lastly, it explores the role of advanced methods, including nanotechnology, marine bioprospecting, and microorganisms-derived biochemicals against the protozoan parasites. This book is useful for students and researchers of pharmacology, parasitology, zoology and other allied fields.¿
As food producers, plants are constantly under attack by insects. Over the course of evolution, plants have not only developed a sophisticated defense apparatus but have also refined biochemical defense mechanisms to protect themselves, thereby maintaining the ecological balance. Plant-pest interactions induce an elaborate array of reactions involving the release of volatile compounds, effector and signaling molecules, trans-membrane proteins, and a variety of enzymes and hormones. This book offers a comprehensive guide to the strategies that plants employ against insects and other pests to ensure their continued survival. Addressing an important gap in the literature, it shares the latest findings in the field of plant-pest interactions for a broad audience. Providing an overview of the current state of knowledge on plant-pest interactions and their role in the genetic improvement of crops, it offers an essential guide for researchers and professionals in the fields of agriculture, plant pathology, entomology, cell biology, molecular biology and genetics.
This collection of poems by Prof. Archana R. Singh, from School of Communication Studies, Panjab University is an expression of her sensitivity, creativity and intellectual capacity to understand the modern society. They are unputdownable. The Gangetic catfish, Clupisoma garua is commercially important inland water teleostean fish which is one of the most dominate species of catfish fishery in Ganga River system. The fish is largest species among the five species known to occur in India, and is considered to be a good table fish throughout the India and neighbouring countries, which fetches a good price in the market. The catch sold in the market comes from the natural stocks. Despite its abundance, consumer demand and palatability, very little information is available on the biology of this fish. The present situation demands the application of scientific method for its culture, but, it is inconceivable without a good knowledge of its biology. This book covers the findings and reviews of various aspects of fishery and biology such as food and feeding habits, reproduction and length and weight relationship of the fish. The book will be useful for those who are working in the field of aquaculture. Each chapter of the book focuses on the basic and current status of the knowledge based on the concerned topics. Hopefully the book will be beneficial not only for academicians but also for industrialists and professionals.
