Zentralfiguren der Komodie sind der seiner Heliastenrolle verfallene altePhilokleon und Bdelykleon, sein Sohn und Gegenspieler. Mitdiesem Duo schafft Aristophanes eine hinreiende Handlung, die Politisches - Satire auf Erscheinungen der attischen Justiz - und Familiares - Umerziehung des Vaters durch den Sohn-kombiniert und mit ihren Losungen uberrascht. Philokleons Protektor Kleon, der fuhrende Politiker der fruhen nachperikleischen Jahre, wird gerupft. Ein in das Stuck integrierter Hundeprozess gehort zu den komischsten Episoden der antiken Literatur. Die Wespen bieten besondere Ansatze zu einer Charakterkomodie avant la lettre. Den vorgegebenen dialogischen und lyrischen Formenschatz der Alten Komodie spielt Aristophanes in musterhafter Fulle aus. Die Lysistrate des Aristophanes gehört zu den großen politischen Komödien der Weltliteratur. Aufgeführt wurde sie in Athen 411 v. Chr. an einem Dionysosfest während des Peloponnesischen Krieges zwischen Athen und Sparta als ein Plädoyer für den Frieden. Da die Männer friedensunfähig sind, übernehmen die Frauen in einer revolutionären Aktion unter Führung der Lysistrate die Initiative zum Frieden, denn auch Frauen haben ¿Verstand¿ und ¿Einsicht¿. Indem die alten Frauen den Männern die Kontrolle über die Staats- und Kriegskasse nehmen und die jungen Frauen zusammen mit den Spartanerinnen in einen Liebesstreik treten, erzwingen sie gemeinsam im Spiel den Frieden und damit die Rettung Griechenlands. Das Ineinander von ernstem Thema und lasziver komischer Handlung ist ein konstitutives Merkmal der attischen Komödie der Klassik, das in der dionysischen Festkultur seine Wurzeln hat. Es hat die Rezeption der Lysistrate bis weit ins 20. Jh. massiv behindert und ist erst in der Moderne als Element einer karnevalesken Komik anerkannt worden.
