The first English translation of the major political works of Benjamin Constant (1767-1830), one of the most important of the French political figures in the aftermath of the revolution of 1789, and a leading member of the liberal opposition to Napoleon and later to the restored Bourbon monarchy. The texts included in this volume are widely regarded as one of the classic formulations of modern liberal doctrine.

Je fus arrêté dans une auberge de Cerenza, petit village de la Calabre, par un débordement du Neto; il y avait dans la même auberge un étranger qui se trouvait forcé d'y séjourner pour la même cause. Il était fort silencieux et paraissait triste; il ne témoignait aucune impatience. Je me plaignais quelquefois à lui, comme au seul homme à qui je pusse parler dans ce lieu, du retard que notre marche éprouvait. Il m'est égal, me répondaitil, d'être ici ou ailleurs. Notre hôte, qui avait causé avec un domestique napolitain qui servait cet étranger sans savoir son nom, me dit qu'il ne voyageait point par curiosité, car il ne visitait ni les ruines, ni les sites, ni les monuments, ni les hommes. Il lisait beaucoup, mais jamais d'une manière suivie; il se promenait le soir, toujours seul, et souvent il passait des journées entières assis, immobile, la tête appuyée sur les deux mains.Au moment où les communications, étant rétablies, nous auraient permis départir, cet étranger tomba trèsmalade. L'humanité me fit un devoir de prolonger mon séjour auprès de lui pour le soigner. Il n'y avait à Cerenza qu'un chirurgien de village; je voulais envoyer à Cozenze chercher des secours plus efficaces. Ce n'est pas la peine, me dit l'étranger; l'homme que voilà est précisément ce qu'il me faut. Il avait raison, peutêtre plus qu'il ne le pensait, car cet homme le guérit. Je ne vous croyais pas si habile, lui ditil avec une sorte d'humeur en le congédiant; puis il me remercia de mes soins, et il partit.
