"Horror means something revolting. Anybody can show you a pailful of innards. But the object of the roles I played is not to turn your stomach - but merely to make your hair stand on end." -Boris Karloff. And make our hair stand on end, he did. Sometimes, he played the good guy, but more often, he showed us the dark side of humanity and the supernatural. He played both Frankenstein's Monster and the evil doctor himself. He played executioners, island explorers, criminals, ghosts, and body snatchers. He just about invented the "mad scientist" trope. With a range from kindly old medical researcher to war criminal, Boris Karloff gave chills to moviegoers for decades. After dozens of throwaway, forgettable roles, he finally hit stardom in the early 1930s with "Frankenstein," and the rest is cinematic history. We're here to look at his horror films- All of them. This book takes you on a fascinating trip through every one of Karloff's horror films, going through a complete synopsis, including spoilers and commentary. This is not a Boris Karloff biography. What it does do is look at Karloff's amazing array of characters shifting from the original incarnation of Frankenstein to maniacs and mad scientists aplenty. We will look at fifty-two horror films and seven important non-horror films that are significant in Boris's career. The man loved what he did, and it often showed through in his films. As he said himself: "I am a very lucky man. Here I am in my 80th year, and I am still able to earn my bread and butter at my profession. I am one of that very small family of the human race who happens to thoroughly enjoy his work. If I didn't enjoy it, I wouldn't go on." -Boris Karloff
Countdown for blastoff... X minus five, four, three, two, X minus one... Fire! X Minus One was an NBC-created show that ran weekly from 1956 to 1958 and had an attempted but failed comeback in 1973. It was a science-fiction anthology series; each week was a completely different story, with no recurring characters or cast. Most of the stories came from the pages of "Galaxy Science Fiction" and "Astounding Science Fiction" magazines and were written by the likes of Ray Bradbury, Isaac Asimov, Robert Heinlein, Fletcher Pratt, Robert Bloch, Clifford Simak, and a host of other major authors. This book is a listener's guide to the series. We will carefully examine all 126 of the original stories from a listener's point of view, including complete synopses and reviews with comments. The book includes links to hear the episodes (online from Archive.org), and the idea is to listen to the original episodes as you read through the book. If you enjoy short science fiction with big ideas and a helping of humor, this is a great find- there are stories involving spaceships, mind control, Martians, mad scientists, charlatans, and robots aplenty. If you are anything at all like the author, you loved reading the sci-fi classics of the fifties, and now you experience that thrill again... with X Minus One.
Dark Fantasy was an American radio supernatural thriller anthology series. It had a short run of 31 episodes, debuting on November 14, 1941, and ending on June 19, 1942. Its writer was Scott Bishop, and it originated from station WKY in Oklahoma City and was heard Friday nights on NBC stations. The stories found a nationwide audience almost immediately, but only lasted until the following summer. This book is a listener's guide to the series. It briefly covers the creation and format of the series then looks at each of the existing episodes individually, including a synopsis, cast list, and commentary on each episode. The book includes links to hear the episodes (free of charge online from Archive.org), and the idea is to listen to the original episodes as you read through the book. If you enjoy short horror fiction, this is a great find- there are stories involving Atlantis and other worlds, talking gorillas, voices from the grave, werewolves, and ghosts aplenty. If you are anything at all like the author, you loved listening to scary stories as a child, and now you can do it again... with Dark Fantasy.
When anything makes money, it brings about imitators. One of the best cases of this was Amicus Productions. Back in 1957 and '58, there were two immensely popular British horror films, "Curse of Frankenstein" and "Horror of Dracula. Everyone saw them, and they made a pile of money, leading to Hammer Films becoming a household name. Two men, Milton Subotsky and Max J. Rosenberg, formed a partnership in a deliberate plan to rival Hammer's success. Their plan became action, and in 1962, they released their first film. Like Hammer, not all of their movies were horror, but they leaned heavily that way. And they had some real successes like "Tales from The Crypt," "Dr. Who and The Daleks," and "The Land That Time Forgot," which are still well known to this day. Although not as prolific or successful overall as Hammer, Amicus did pretty well for itself for about sixteen years. They made everything from serious drama to ridiculous musicals; we'll look at all of them here. Most of the "Horror Guys Guides" series focuses on only the horror films of a particular actor or studio, but this one will look at everything Amicus produced, as well as a couple that they didn't but with which they still have a connection. There weren't that many connected ones, and they're all noteworthy, so why not? This book takes each Amicus film and closely related non-Amicus films and examines them all individually. We watched every film recently, specifically with the intent of writing this book. Each entry lists the writer, director, principal cast members, run time, alternate titles, if any, and then a full synopsis with spoilers of each story. And we top them off with my commentary and occasional bits of interesting trivia. Some are definitely worth checking out for yourself. Some maybe not so much. The fun will be reading all about them and catching up on the ones that you missed- maybe even the ones you've never heard about at all.

If you're anything like me, you've collected a zillion media files over the years. Music, Photos, Movies, even entire series of TV shows. Yes, you can store them on your computer and watch them when you get the chance, but what if you want to watch them from your iPhone or tablet? What if you want to watch them when you aren't home, or even in the same city? What if you just want to hear podcasts or watch web shows? The Plex Media Server can solve all those problems for you. It serves up music, videos, photos, podcasts, and even more importantly, it's reliable, it looks great, has a bunch of built-in features that makes browsing your huge collection a load of fun. Oh, and the software is completely free. On the other hand, one of the disadvantages of Plex is that it works best when loaded onto a dedicated computer that is on and available non-stop, all the time, 24/7. One reliable and inexpensive solution to this issue is to run your Plex Media Server from a Raspberry Pi computer, the tiny little computer that'll set you back less than $55 for everything you need. This book explains how to set up a Raspberry Pi for use as a Plex Server. We'll look at hardware options, downloading and installing the operating system and Plex software, how to configure your hard drives, folders, and files, how to get files into the Pi from other places in the house, and how to access everything, from anywhere. It's all you need to know, and only what you need to know! Contents: 1. Introducing Plex and the Pi 2. Required Hardware 3. Setting up the Hardware 4. Setting Up the Plex Media Server Software 5. Importing media 6. Configuring the Plex Media Server 7. Backing up Your SD Card 8. Backing Up Your Hard Drive(s) 9. Using the Plex Media Server 10. Conclusion

What if, instead of simply plugging an external or internal hard drive into your working computer, you could have a file server located somewhere in your home or office? One that offers access to files for any device on the premises, taking into account security settings that you can set up?This is the function of a NAS, or "Network Attached Storage" device. This file server does nothing except act as a go-between between the network and the hard drives. The Raspberry Pi, a super-inexpensive, low-power consumption, tiny computer, is just perfect for handling this task. The software we will be installing to make this happen is called Openmediavault, or OMV for short. It's an open source project that is heavily developed and still getting new features regularly. OMV is the NAS software, but it all runs on the Linux operating system, which means it's stable and very reliable. Not to mention all this software is completely free of charge. This book explains how to set up a Raspberry Pi for use as a NAS Server. We'll look at hardware options, downloading and installing the operating system and Openmediavault software, how to configure your hard drives (either with a single hard drive or as a dual-drive RAID system), folders, and files, how to get files into the Pi from other places in the house, and how to access everything from other devices on the network using secure user accounts. It's all you need to know, and only what you need to know!
