The Formation of Vegetable Mould Through the Action of WormsBy Charles Darwin

Darwin's biological studies on the 'Beagle' are justly famous but he also spent a huge amount of time and effort investigating and documenting the geological formations that he encountered on his journey. This volume brings together his detailed observations on volcanic islands and South America and is still a wonderful sourcebook of material as well as offering further insights into the life and work of a celebrated and meticulous scientist. This is a facsimile reprint of a good quality scan - there may be a few places where very small text is hard to read. The original illustrations and plates are included (in black and white).

This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards:1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions.2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work.We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

First published in 1871 and considered his other great work alongside "The Origin of Species," Darwin's "The Descent of Man" is a work that continues the scientist's theories on evolution. Divided into three parts, this book's purpose, as given in the introduction, is to consider whether or not man is descended from a pre-existing form, his manner of development, and the value of the differences between human races. Darwin goes on to systematically explore the evolution of man in terms of physical and mental traits, to condemn the debate on whether humans of different races were of different species, to expound his theory of sexual selection, and to address natural selection and its effect on civilized society, establishing some of the founding ideas on eugenics and what has come to be known as Social Darwinism. Still of great interest and importance in scientific thought today, "The Descent of Man" is a foundational text on the science of human evolution. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper.

The Squashed edition of The Origin of Species by Charles Darwin. Abridged from the original text to read in an hour or so. Squashed editions are precise abridgements - the original ideas, in their own words, the full beam of the book, the quotable quotes and all the famous lines, but neatly honed down to the length of a readable short story. • - The Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life

Darwin's theory of evolution is based on key facts and the inferences drawn from them, which biologist Ernst Mayr summarised as follows:-Every species is fertile enough that if all offspring survived to reproduce, the population would grow (fact).-Despite periodic fluctuations, populations remain roughly the same size.-Resources such as food are limited and are relatively stable over time.-A struggle for survival ensues (inference).-Individuals in a population vary significantly from one another.-Much of this variation is heritable.
