"The Stories of Fortune's Vicissitudes" is the first complete English translation of Poggio Bracciolini's book "Historiae de Varietate Fortunae". The book is bilingual providing the parallel English and Latin texts. The first chapter contains the description of Rome's ruins as seen by Poggio in 1448 AD, five years before the beginning of Modern Times (1453). This report was so important that Edward Gibbon decided to finish his six-volume "History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire" by citing the first chapter of Poggio's book. The second and third chapters bring the historical examples of Fortune's volatility. The fourth chapter contains the account of the first travel to India by Niccolo de Conti (1419-1439 AD), brought as an example of a favorable Fortune. "In the last days of Pope Eugenius the Fourth, two of his servants, the learned Poggius and a friend, ascended the Capitoline hill; reposed themselves among the ruins of columns and temples; and viewed from that commanding spot the wide and various prospect of desolation. The place and the object gave ample scope for moralizing on the vicissitudes of fortune, which spares neither man nor the proudest of his works, which buries empires and cities in a common grave; and it was agreed, that in proportion to her former greatness, the fall of Rome was the more awful and deplorable." Edward Gibbon. "History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire". Volume 6 Chapter LXXI

"Drop a pebble in a pool and the waves spread. We can be that pebble" - Gladys Shaw The 30th ANNIVERSARY of the demise of the POLL TAX makes you think about a lot of things. Justice. Fairness. Civility. How elites often carve out a world fit for themselves, whilst steamrolling others. There are ultimately people in society who don't wish to share or care, but rather extract the maximum suffering from those already on the breadline; those simply doing their best. CAN'T PAY, WON'T PAY is a timely examination of a rotten period in British politics - a period when decency and responsible government were flouted and replaced by the rallying cries of bounders, chancers and opportunists. Chris Robinson reveals who did what, together with the big political names, some of whom would rather forget their unconscionable involvement. 'An incredibly important book. A microcosm of everything that was wrong with the poll tax' Andrew Routledge 'A compelling deconstruction of the turmoil that led to the most reviled tax in British history. From sweeping analysis of political upheaval to personal accounts of protests, Robinson's taut prose charts the staggering short-sightedness of Thatcher's government and the almighty backlash that ensued. A new benchmark in the study of our country's greatest modern-day rebellion' Ed Bingham, author of Broadlake (published 31 May 2023)

Even so, He has provided sufficient understanding and encouragement that enables her to go on.Chosen in the Furnace is written so that others who struggle with clinical depression will be strengthened by finding they are not alone in their “furnace of affliction.” With God’s help, they too can go on.

A key feature of the New Labour government's constitutional reform agenda has been the introduction of a number of alternative methods of voting for both existing elections and for those to new political institutions. This book examines the workings of these various systems of elections, looking specifically at how they operate within the United Kingdom and their direct impact on representation and governance. It also considers voting behaviour in the UK, with reference to the context of the electoral system being used. In conclusion there is an attempt to discover the extent to which the introduction and operation of different electoral systems has affected voter behaviour.
