Ein Irrlicht, schwebt ich heut im Traume auf einem weiten, düstren Sumpfe, und um mich der Gespielen Reigen in wunderlich geschlungnen Kränzen. Wir sangen traurig-süße Lieder mit leisen, feinen Geisterstimmen, viel feiner als die lauten Grillen, die fern im Korn eintönig sangen. Wir sangen, wie das harte Schicksal uns wehre, daß wir Menschen würden: So oft schon waren wir erschienen, wo sich zwei Liebende vereinten, doch immer, ach, war schon ein andres Irr-Seelchen uns zuvorgekommen, und seufzend hatten wir von neuem zurück gemußt zum dunklen Sumpfe. So sangen wir von unsern Leiden ¿ als uns mit einem Mal Entsetzen in wirren Läufen huschen machte. Ein Mensch entsprang dem nahen Walde und lief verzweifelten Gebarens gerade auf uns zu ¿: Der Boden schlug schwankend, eine schwere Woge, dem Armen überm Haupt zusammen. Verstummt zu zitterndem Geflüster umschwirrten wir die grause Stelle ... Bald aber sangen wir von neuem die alten traurig-süßen Lieder.
