Rev. Gates began recording with Columbia records in April of 1926. During this year Rev. Gates recorded 85 sides. In August through September alone Rev. Gates recorded 48 sides in New York. He recorded for Gennett, Banner, Paramount, Pathe, Okeh, Vocalion, Victor and others. His first big hit which sold approximately 35, 000 copies by the end of 1926 was "Death's Black Train Is Coming". Recorded in New York City in November of 1926 "Death Might Be Your Santa Claus" became his next big seller by the fall of 1927.Rev. Gates was an extraordinary communicator as many of his recordings were powerful warnings of punishments that awaited all sinners. This discography covers his entire recording career from 1926 - 1941. You will find all recorded tracks on every label issued up until 1941; includes matrix numbers, recording dates, pseudonyms, accompaniments, recording type and recording locations. On August 4, 1927 Jimmie Rodgers had the very first recording session of his career, although he had no accompanying personnel that did not affect the session in the least. The session actually got started about 2:00 and lasted until almost 4:30, two songs were recorded from this session the very first was "The Soldier's Sweetheart" and the second track was "Sleep, Baby, Sleep" both would be issued at a later date. Jimmie would sing and play guitar for both songs and for "Sleep, Baby, Sleep" he would also yodel, this would be his first recorded yodel, this is significant in the fact that Jimmie Rodgers would become one of the best, if not the best yodeler to ever record (in my opinion) and this would show in the vast number of his future recordings. This discography covers Jimmie Rodgers recordings from his very first recording at the Bristol Sessions in 1927 to his very last session two days before his death in New York City in 1933. Included are all his 78 RPM issued tracks on the Victor, Bluebird, Electradisk, Montgomery Ward and Sunrise record labels. In addition to his issued tracks there is a section on all unissued tracks (on 78 RPM) many were issued at a later date on 33 and CD. You will also find a comprehensive listing of 45 RPM singles, extended play and 33 RPM (LP / Albums). An International discography of 78 RPM, 45 RPM and 33 RPM records (although not exhaustive) is included. There is a full performer index, song index, unissued track index, record and record label photographs, song writing index and more...
Bristol, Tennessee July 25 - August 5, 1927In 1925 Peer left OKEH records, and in 1926 he went over to talk with Victor records. He approached them with the idea that he would work for nothing - in return he would control the copyrights to the songs he recorded, VICTOR records agreed and in the summer of 1927 Ralph Peer went on his first recording trip for The Victor Talking Machine Company. His first stop was Bristol, Tennessee. Between July 25 and August 5 Peer would record what would become known as the "Big Bang" of "Country" Music. He didn't know at that time, but by recording so much quality material from unknown artists during July and August of 1927 in Bristol, Tennessee he (Ralph Peer) and all the artists would have an enormous impact on the future of "Country" Music. The Recording Artists Included - Ernest Stoneman, Jimmie Rodgers, The Carter Family, Ernest Phipps & His Holiness Quartet, Uncle Eck Dunford, Blue Ridge Corn Shuckers, Johnson Brothers, Blind Alfred Reed, El Watson, B.F. Shelton, The Shelor Family, Alfred G. Karnes, Bull Mountain Moonshiners, Henry Whitter, Dad Blackard's Moonshiners and others....
