What happens when you want to depart an already-established life to begin an entirely new one, leaving behind an enviable job and steady paycheck for the thrilling vagaries of becoming a self-employed writer? Well, tarot readers consistently pull The Fool card when giving you an oracle reading, for one thing! But how foolish is it to follow a calling towards the craft and career one feels they were meant for? Can you write a first book, get it published by mainstream New York presses, and subsequently produce another and another...until all of a sudden you have created a whole series that spans decades? Can you do so even in this day & age when the world of publishing is undergoing such change? Yes, if one is guided and tenacious enough, claims the author of the unconventional 'Gathering The Dreamcatchers' companion novels. This is the story of how the first 'dreamcatcher' came to be...
Can peace be made with one's ancestors, even after they are dead? Once upon a time my mother's fondest desire was to have a book published. Not just any book, mind you, but a beautiful volume full of wonder and sparkling imagery glittering forth with a message of hope for the world. We had similar goals, my mother and I, but came from very different generations and quite different personal experiences ... what with her being a pale, blonde immigrant of European descent, and I: a brown-skinned, native-born, POC American. We actually did not have much in common in how we chose to live out our lives, after I too became an independent adult. Nor did we necessarily agree on what should be perceived as 'inspirationally hopeful' regarding humanity's plight! Over time, this led to escalating strife. Yet here we are in 2023, with something we were able to collaborate on together - a project entitled Skating Across Thin Ice: Surviving The Times With Relationships Intact that my mother began quite awhile ago, and I recently completed - even though one of us is alive, while the other has long since passed on to greener pastures. How surprising this might seem, in an era where globally so many contemporary families and friends have become estranged from one another... But oh what an interesting weaving of ideas and personal-ancestral-Universal healing can be brought about by just such a melding of past and present minds, regarding The Future.
What exactly is "intentional community?" And how does one go about co-creating it? Are there typical hurdles to overcome? In the Green/Sustainable Living Movement, the term "community" often means folks coming together to create some form of shared home space: from co-housing co-ops in cities, to permaculture or off-the-grid nature-based country retreats...from separatist women's or people of color lands, to communities aimed at unplugging from the wider world's repressive "systems" as much as humanly possible. The illustrated, creative non-fiction account DOING INTENTIONAL COMMUNITY: Expanded 2023 Edition follows building a certain type of artistic/spiritual co-home adventure on the Big Island of Hawaii from the ground up...and how this particular, now-worldwide sense of community continues to transform today. Like a prismatic drop in the ocean, beyond just being a collection of individuals, global "intentional community" can also equate to entire villages, cities, and nations in the process of cultivating a common history and shared economic/political/spiritual goals. What is "world peace," if not that?
Whether our realities are filled with people or not, are we ever truly alone? Dive into Life's adventures with author, editor, filmmaker, tropical artist sanctuary founder Cristina Salat. An exploration into human sovereignty, connection, and evolution from the author of HOW TO BE FREE (When The World Seems Anything But), EX-FRIENDS & EX-LOVERS BELOVED: Sticking Together Through Thick & Thin -vs- Letting Go, FEEDING FRENZY: Devourers of the Newly Published Spotted -- Writers Beware, and the 'GATHERING THE DREAMCATCHERS' companion novels. Available in color hardcover & e-edition + b/w trade paperback print.
How do you know when it is right to stick together with someone, working situations out in good times & bad -versus- when it is time to let go? Why do some relationships in the trajectory of life leave indelible impressions that make us want to remain in touch...while other connections - even good ones with no trauma or drama involved - later on down the line, seem dry as dust; almost as if they never happened at all? Yet this oddness doesn't necessarily correspond with how lengthy or vital a relationship felt at the time it was originally lived. An exploration into human connection from the author of HOW TO BE FREE (When The World Seems Anything But), FEEDING FRENZY: Devourers of the Newly Published Spotted -- Writers Beware, and the 'Gathering The Dreamcatchers' companion novels.
Leaving New Mexico and the pueblo where she was born for the streets of San Francisco, Lisel Martinez searches for a life different than the one that seems destined to be her fate. Fiction with an edge of Truth. Isn't it time our human family put aside its differences to co-create something better than an ongoing dystopia where hardly anyone's happy, safe, or doing what they love? From the author of the 'Gathering The Dreamcatchers' companion novels/novellas, 'The World Is Beautiful' illustrated non-fiction, and many fine films along with Green Flame Omnimedia slims and combo compilations.
Life's hard knocks - along with a human Reality that's seemingly going to hell in a handbasket - might send any sane person running for cover, thereby significantly derailing their dreams...though it's more important than ever that people start (or finish!) fulfilling their Life Purpose by doing what they are on this planet to do. In a time of contemporary chaos, as the energies of the new Age of Peace rise, perhaps "freedom" is just another word for nothing left to lose? The author (ex-New York editor, filmmaker, tropical goddess sanctuary founder, sacred Mystery School facilitator, and all around Jill-of-all-trades) explores the journey of breaking free from inner & outer restrictions while wrestling the way towards being (& remaining!) a creative battery to help power beneficial evolutionary change... ...and what a journey it's been! Available in color hardcover, b/w trade paperback, + color e-editions.
For years, author/ex-New York editor/filmmaker/tropical artist sanctuary founder Cristina Salat had been planning to write a definitive tome about living (some might say surviving) the creative life. The expansive memoir was to be entitled Creative Living: From Starving Artist To Self-Employed Bliss, and it was envisioned as part in-the-trenches memoir and part ins-&-outs of how the business sides of media industries like the worlds of New York book & magazine publishing plus Hollywood movie-making could be navigated, as she'd been experiencing them. The problem with undertaking such a project was, in some years our heroine was just too busy starving...and then in other years when she was successful, she was just too busy, period. (And not always all that blissful either!) So decades went by...until all of a sudden one day, from beneath waving palm trees on an island where she now lives, the hero of this personal narrative took a soulful look back at the life & work she'd managed to create over the years in spite of everything, and - even with all the unexpected twists & turns the journey took (and was still taking!) - she found Life to be very, very good. Is it possible to not only survive but thrive as a writer/artist/creative person/entrepreneur in today's chaotic world? This author definitively says: Yes!(Though it does take a fair amount of grit & gumption along the way!) This is the 2nd edition. Print = black/white illustrated, e-version = color.
Why is being a person so hard? Especially trying to be a happy person? Why do things like self-esteem go right out the window even when you're truly, madly, potently in love?! Alternating between the past and the present, this 'Gathering The Dreamcatchers' novel lights up the adventures of someone having a rough time becoming the heroine of her own crazy story, while wrangling the way towards a happy ending she's determined to create. From the author of Living In Secret, The Skin of Water: Defending The Dreamcatchers, Esoterica, Paradise Found, and ACTION: The Future Is Here. Who would've guessed a complete change in direction could transpire in just one week. When everything in Life gets ruined, can you begin again?
With expanding possibilities for self- plus independent-publishing blossoming in recent years, a new breed of publishing experts have appeared, ready to feed on the ever-growing market of literary hopefuls. Touting wisdom gleaned from time in the business that often equals 5-7 years or less, and has generally only been acquired from working with e-commerce platforms outside of the mainstream publishing industry at large, much of the common wisdom being preached by such publishing gurus today is questionable...and some of it seems to be dead wrong. At least dead wrong for anyone who wants to make a living from their creative content. After enjoying a full-time, decades-long career in the industry - working with both large, traditional houses as well as with today's print and e-book publishing alternatives - author/ex-NY editor Cristina Salat explores facets of the feeding frenzy now aimed at targeting the wallets of writers, and why so many indie 'experts' these days seem to be pushing ideas that are destined to fail.
It sure can be a long time in coming, the full on birth of some novels... Best known for the Gathering The Dreamcatchers fiction series along with standalone nonfiction titles such as The World Is Beautiful and Creative Living: From Starving Artist to Self-Employed Bliss, author CRISTINA SALAT began the story that eventually became ROBIN, ROMEO, & JULIETTE THE NOVEL: Not Your Typical Love Story many years ago, at the invitation of a HarperCollins editor...back when getting one's work to market within the confines of mainstream New York publishing houses was the only option. The world of books certainly has come a long way too. Whereas once the mixed race (and otherwise diverse) friendships encircling brown-haired, brown-eyed, brown-skinned Robin Ciszek explored impending adulthood upon small (though mighty!) stages -- as revealed in the black & white, photo illustrated author introduction to this Special Edition of the novel -- now Robin & friends are at last claiming their rightful place in reality, current events, and human history. Isn't it high time we each do the same? For Robin, it's Senior Year, and she just might be in love.(Not with Christopher. With someone new.) While across town, getting to be with a genuinely sexy girl is the day a certain loner named Donald has been praying for.He can't be meant to remain a lonely, frustrated loser forever, can he?
