First Edition: LukivPress Online (Quesnel, BC), 2012. Revised Edition: LukivPress (Victoria, BC), 2022. Introduction In addition to about 40 years of history from the death of Israel's first king, Saul, to the death of its second, David (approximately: 1077 to 1037 BCE), First Chronicles, written by researcher Ezra (completed in 460 BCE), contains genealogical records that safeguarded the priesthood lineage and tribal ownership of land. The records also detailed Davidic heredity that would lead directly to the Messiah. 77 years had passed since King Cyrus of the Medo-Persians released faithful Jews from Babylon (in 537 BCE) to repatriate Jerusalem, and 55 years had passed since Governor Zerubbabel completed its temple (in 515 BCE). Although lacking the glory of Solomon's temple (used for 420 years: 1027 to 607 BCE), it would last longer (almost 500 years: 515 BCE to late into the first century BCE). But zeal of the Jews to stick to the worship of their God Jehovah had waned; they needed encouragement! An excerpt Chapter 13 Obed-edom, servant of Edom, Ha!, how Jehovah's spiritMade the faces of your householdAglow, for three months!, howGentle winds passed throughYour house that smelled of oliveOil and wine and roasted fat, How you, not a Philistine fromGath, caught David's thought, Like an eagle catches prey inIts talons, but you were neverA predator, and you were certainlyNever red nor hairy like Esau, You servant of Edom, ha! Forward, by Paul Bagdon (novelist) Dan Lukiv must be a kid. Dusty and cranky old adults like the rest of us who worry about bills and the new noise in the car and what the boss will think of the latest project simply don't have the sensibilities-the spark-to realize that creatures who smell strange are funny to young people, and that time travel, teachers named Miss Snapdragon, and idiosyncratic species called Quirks and Quibils are the very stuff of laughter, adventure, drama-and fun. Quibils and Quirks is a precisely orchestrated chaos of sight gags, weird and wholly engaging characters and creatures, puns and word play, pratfalls and slapstick-and there's a genuine story melded into the pages, as well. The dialogue sings-and gurgles, snuffs, yelps, belches, uluates, and snivels, too. The laughs are frequent, as they must be in a work such as Quibils and Quirks, and in my mind, it's here that Dan Lukiv excels. Because he's a kid himself (I refuse to believe otherwise), his humor is fresh and innocent; the convoluted logic expressed by the critters and characters is hilarious without the taint of guile or innuendo that seems to be so pervasive in current YA efforts. The scenes and situations sparkle because of their incongruity, their lack of adult parameters-and, in many cases because they reflect the stolid silliness of the adult world in a Lukiv-created, wonderfully irregular mirror. Who is Dan Lukiv? Beats me, but I'd have to describe him as Milne with a case of the giggles, Beatrix Potter on hallucinogens, or Proust with a lobotomy. But, whoever the guy is, he knows what he's doing, and Quibils and Quirks establishes that. This is a must-read, not only for the intended audience, but for the few of us oldies who haven't forgotten how to laugh. We need to hear more from Dan Lukiv-soon. Comments from kids: "I like all the characters in the story because they are funny and I like funny people. That's why I like [Mr. Lukiv's] story sooo much. I like the boy [Hooper] with the cauliflower ears. He's funny. I also like the lady with the red swirly hair [Hooper's mum]. I like the part when Mr. Hamburger almost faints because of the awful smell that comes from the quibils. I think the quibils and [people] should try to become friends, not enemies...There isn't anything I don't like in the story because I like it all. I love [this] story." "I really like the [time travel]. I think it's terrific." "Very well-written." "It's funny and I think it's easy to understand....The time machine is awesome (I like writing stories about time machines). I think it is funny that the mayor [becomes] a baby." "The coolest book I've ever read!" "I've read lots of children's books, but I've never read anything like this before." Other comments: "This is great!...I've been in the newspaper business for 20 years, and I've never seen anything like this come across my desk just for kids....We're breaking new ground here," Jerry MacDonald, The Quesnel Cariboo Observer. Revised Edition: LukivPress (Victoria, BC), 2022. Introduction In 518 BCE, Zechariah, the prophet, writes: "'Return to me, ' declares Jehovah of armies, 'and I will return to you.'" (Zechariah 1:3). Repatriated Jews (many from Babylon) need Jehovah's hand of protection against surrounding hostile nations, but they also need to refocus their energy to rebuild the temple. Would that protection, then, include Jewish military might? We find the answer at Zechariah 4:6: "'Not by a military force, nor by power, but by my spirit, ' says Jehovah." This prophet, along with his contemporary, Haggai, spiritually energize the people to do their God's will-complete the temple work! Now, even more than 2500 years later, Jehovah's people today find encouragement from Haggai and Zechariah to do Jehovah's will, in these last days of this system of things, which includes Christian preaching worldwide. An excerpt, a poem based on chapter one of Zechariah At home among stones, These shrub-trees-Do they rejoice while snow Falls, while their whiteFlowers scent the earth, While their blue-black Berries offer up fragranceTo hungry teeth? Revised Edition: LukivPress (Victoria, BC), 2022. Introduction Solomon wrote down many of the 3000 maxims credited to his hand in the book of Proverbs (Agur the son of Jakeh wrote chapter 30; Lemuel the king [some believe Lemuel was another name for Solomon] wrote chapter 31). But, of course, his hand, inspired by his God Jehovah, records more than earthly wisdom. These proverbs, if we give them a place to dwell in our hearts, and if we give them time in our meditations, provide us with insight, discernment, thinking ability, and Godly wisdom, in abundance, and help us appreciate the weight of scriptures such as Hebrews 4:12: "For the word of God is alive and exerts power and is sharper than any two-edged sword and pierces even to the dividing of soul and spirit, and of joints from the marrow, and is able to discern thoughts and intentions of the heart." Revised Edition: LukivPress (Victoria, BC), 2022. Introduction King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon lays siege to Jerusalem in 618 BCE. He orders "Ashpenaz his chief court official to bring some of the Israelites, including those of royal and noble descent[, to Babylon]. They [are] to be youths without any defect, of good appearance, endowed with wisdom, knowledge, and discernment, and capable of serving in the king's palace." One of those youths, Daniel (likely a teenager), begins an adventure that uncloaks him as an interpreter of the king's fantastic dreams. One of those dreams, of an "immense image" that represents a succession of world powers, reaches right into the last days of the whole world's political machine. Daniel the governmental administrator, the interpreter of dreams, the prophet: He writes prophecy that describes mathematically the year of the Messiah's arrival. He witnesses the fall of Babylon, supplanted (in 539 BCE) by the Medo-Persian empire. Scheming, jealous "high officials and...satraps" trick Darius the Mede, forcing him to send Daniel to the lions pit. But Daniel lives! No lion harms him in any way! Now what? The overjoyed Medo-Persian ruler turns the table: He "g[ives] an order, and the men who ha[ve] accused Daniel [are] brought, and they [are] thrown into the lions' pit, along with their sons and their wives." The lions eat them. Daniel even talks to a high-ranking angel, Gabriel, who speaks for Jehovah: "You are someone very precious." The 12 chapters of this book provide substantial evidence of why the God of the universe loves his servant Daniel, who writes many secrets that will remain sealed, or undecipherable, "until the time of the end" of earth's worldly system. An excerpt Chapter 2 Through time the tunnel, The stone flies, A missile that crushesTowers that reach the sky, Like Ziggurats, And vanity, And greed, And the imagination of menWho see themselvesEverywhere, And the lineage of lordingCollapses, Like all the great places of spaceAnd mind, And so, the towers of great cities, Of fortified walls, Crumble into the dustOr their progenitors. Revised Edition: LukivPress (Victoria, BC), 2022. Introduction Micah's seven chapters cover about 60 years (circa 777 to 717 BCE), foretelling the fall of Samaria, capital of Israel, and Jerusalem, capital of Judah. He says that Jehovah will make "Samaria a heap of ruins....All her graven images will be crushed to pieces...." (Micah 1:6, 7). He asks, "What are the high places [places of apostate worship] of Judah? Are they not Jerusalem?" (Micah 1:5) He speaks of the Hebrews' humiliation for abandoning the worship of their Creator by telling them to "make [themselves] as bald as an eagle [likely referring to a type of vulture]." (Micah 1:16) That is their glory? Due to corruption among kings and princes, and false prophesizing, along with false religious practises adopted from nations that reject the worship of Jehovah, even Jerusalem-the seat of David's throne that will eventually usher in the Messiah who will transform earth into an Edenic paradise-will "become heaps of ruins." (Micah 3:12) And yet, in spite of the stiff-necked attitudes of these descendants of Jacob, Jehovah reveals that, mercifully, he will "certainly gather all of...Jacob....In unity [he] will place them, like sheep in the pen." (Micah 2:12) Such a prophecy explains that Jehovah offers hope to his wayward people, even though "their best one is like thorns." (Micah 7:4) An excerpt 5. Seven shepherds?Count them, eightDukes. Each sheep, They call out, by name, Each day, as these onesEat and rest and play inGrassy pastures, nearStreams. See their rods, Their courage, Dangerous to wolvesAnd beasts with teeth, Even claws, Watch! A bruised hip, Cut knee. "Here, myCherished little one, Let me pour this oil Upon your wound."See, another sheep, Sick; he holds it firmly, Pours a remedy of juice Into the weakened crea-Ture's mouth, from aWell-used skin bottle: "There, my little one, The bad taste will makeYou well." And, there, A sheep too weak to stand; He carries the limp One, wrapped in a blanketMade from its brothers'Own wool: "Let me showYou love, my darling Little one. It will make youStrong." And the sheepLove their eight dukes, Their princes, Their shepherds with staffsThat attack strong ones ofThe thick forest who wishThem harm. Revised Edition: LukivPress (Sardis, BC), 2022. Introduction The Babylonians would destroy Jerusalem? Unbelievable! That's how many Jews viewed Habakkuk's (c. 628 BCE) prophecies. Did Jerusalem not have Jehovah's temple? Did the Davidic lineage of kings not continue to rule from that famous city? Did the "rising" Chaldeans (Babylonians) not still have to contend with powerful Pharaoh Necho? And yet, speaking for Jehovah, Habakkuk said, "For here I am raising up the Chaldeans, the ruthless and impetuous nation. They sweep through vast stretches of the earth to seize homes not theirs. They are frightening and fearsome. They establish their own justice and authority. Their horses are swifter than leopards, and they are fiercer than wolves in the night. Their warhorses gallop forward; their horses come from far away. They swoop down like the eagle rushing to feed." (Habakkuk 1:6-8) Although Jehovah would protect the lives of faithful servants, woes awaited those who wallowed in apostasy. History and Biblical chronology tell us that those woes fell upon the unfaithful in 607 BCE, when Babylon viciously felled that once glorious city of David. An excerpt 2. Filled with themselves, The seas rejoice, Like fountains overflowing With clean water, Like lips that speakOut of a pure heart, Like a child who states truthWhen others lie-O the knowledge of Jehovah Fills the earth, As green grass spreads outIts hands to fill the meadow, See, cedars fill the forestsOf Lebanon; how theyRejoice about their glorious Size, about the God whoCrafted the little frogThat leaps, The crab that scurriesAcross wet sand, The swallow that chirps About kindness, The lion that roars, The child who kisses his Mother's cheek, The mountain that covers itselfWith new snow- See, The knowledge of JehovahFills the land with song. First Edition: Published in Academic Exchange Extra (University of Northern Colorado [Greeley, CO]), 2010, August. Revised Edition: LukivPress (Victoria, BC), 2022. Introduction Likely written by Samuel, the prophet, in 1090 BCE, the book of Ruth tells a story of loyalty, or loving-kindness, between two widowed women: Naomi and her daughter-in-law Ruth. The story covers approximately 11 years, and opens with the women arriving in Bethlehem at the beginning of the barley harvest. The pain of their widowhood, although not erased, meets up with great blessings from Jehovah that underscore not only his obvious interest in the Messianic lineage (Ruth, a Moabitess, will become an ancestor of Christ), but also his warmth towards loyal servants who need practical help. An excerpt Chapter 1 Naomi, wife of dead Elimelech, In the days of 12 saviours, youEscaped drought and famineIn Moab, but not widowhood, Nor did you find comfort in theStrength of Mahlon, the one whoGrows weak, nor in Chilion, theOne failing. O your buried sons!Naomi-"Pleasantness" sang yourHebrew root, but Mara-"O bitterness" you became. CymbalsClashed out your consonants. HistoryRecords your empty wombAnd ripe humiliation, But the loving-kindness of your GodWill wrap you in Ruth's heartAnd give you, like the widow ofZarephath, a better place in time. First Edition: LukivPress Online (Quesnel, BC), 2012. Revised Edition: LukivPress (Victoria, BC), 2022. Introduction Ahasuerus (likely Xerxes I, son of Darius the Great [Darius Hystaspis]) rules the Persian Empire of 127 jurisdictional districts, from India to Ethiopia (accession year: 496 BCE). But his self-serving Prime Minister, Haman, dupes him into authorizing the annihilation of all Jews in the royal realm. Haman, however, does not realize that the king's beautiful wife, Esther, is Jewish! This vindictive man's story of hatred for Jews contains plot twists and irony of such dramatic clarity that even a quick reading of Esther leaves the reader with a sharpened sense about Jehovah, a saviour and a God of justice. As the Almighty Saviour of his people (who once upon a time seemed doomed between the bloodthirsty Egyptian army and the deep Red Sea [1513 BCE]), Jehovah clearly not only saves his servants from grave danger, even extinction, but he also leaves disturbing yet memorable images, in the name of ironic justice, in history. For example, Haman erects a stake to hang Mordecai, Esther's cousin and guardian, upon. How he, full of arrogance and egotism, hates loyal, courageous Mordecai! But Haman ends up dead upon that stake, and Mordecai ends up serving Ahasuerus as the new Prime Minister! Likewise, Haman's murderous scheme for the Jews backfires, but this debunked politician doesn't live long enough to see the enormity of his failure. An excerpt Chapter 8 Persians, heavy-footed by dread, Turned into Jews, Of sorts, And their flesh, no longer the variable xLike Haman, Stayed warm, And they neither poured their own bloodUpon their own headsNor placed themselves like coins, In dark Sheol, to payFor rash thoughtsIn the skulls of sun-crazedSwordsmen.
