While racing back to Aerona, Tyber encounters Prince Winsom and a swell of dragon riders heading to the mother city to establish order and assert King Aymon's authority. Not an easy task. Word from those fleeing the mother city is that Lord Bisminth has arrested all the royal hordesmen and put unknown mercenaries in the skies. The Cadwaller family no longer controls the heart of the kingdom. To retake the city, Tyber and Ren rise to new heights in the defense of friends, family, and the kingdom.Unexpected champions are chosen in this conclusion of the Dragonjacks series.
Tyber can't wait to track down those responsible for harming the dragons of Cadwaller. Fortunately, King Aymon wasted no time in attaching a dragon healer to Tyber's horde and sending them off to learn more about the dragon illness and The Shepherd's claims that the dragons are tied to a plot to overthrow the King and Wing Master Trysten. As Tyber and his hordesmates return to the eastern edge of the kingdom, they find that clues and answers are few and far between. Just as they start to make progress, Tyber's cover is blown. The brilliant blue of his dragon Rius is recognized and tied to The Shepherd's disappearance. With their true identities known, and dragonjack hordes combing the countryside for them, Tyber and his hordesmates flee for the safety of the nearest King's weyr. Along the way, they discover a clue that takes them to the source of the illness and the person responsible for it. But getting word back to King Aymon requires that Tyber, Ren, and Ander retrieve their stolen dragons from the monster behind the illness before it is too late.
Tyber hoped that the King would waste no time in putting him and his hordemates back on the trail of the scale-clad monster. He was eager to return to the Wight Valley, follow their leads, and finally put an end to those responsible for the dragon sickness. But King Aymon has other plans. In the mother city, a former guardsman is believed to have further knowledge of what is happening to the dragons of Cadwaller. Tyber and his mates are to find out what he knows and report back to the King. Finding the guardsman will prove to be tough enough, and getting him to divulge what he knows will be something else entirely. As they dig into events both recent and past in search of clues, events lead them directly to the rich and powerful who control the city in King Aymon's absence, and when they get too close to the truth, they find themselves barred from the city. With their leads nearly exhausted and their movements curtailed, Tyber and his hordesmates turn to old friends for help in completing their mission, and unexpectedly uncover an old familiar enemy and a plot to overthrow the King and his family.
Tyber's first assignment after graduating from The King's Royal Academy of Dragon Riders isn't as simple as he had expected. Instead of patrolling the capital city with his dragon Rius, Tyber is hand-picked to complete an assignment for the new King. The King's brother has been murdered. Although his assassins have been captured, the man who hired them, one known only as The Shepherd, remains at large. Tyber is tasked with tracking him down. His past acts of heroism, his awkwardness as a new hordesman, and the youth of his dragon all make him a good choice to go undercover, infiltrate the dragonjacks, and bring The Shepherd back to face justice. But Tyber's first assignment might be his last. In a far corner of the kingdom where the King's reach is not so strong, Tyber and his companions discover an illness among the dragons that threatens to unravel the very source of the King's power. To save the dragons and complete his mission, Tyber must put his trust, his life, and his true identity into the hands of his enemies. He will need their help to capture The Shepherd and uncover a plot to dethrone the King who has helped lift Tyber's family from poverty, and is now poised to do the same for all in the Kingdom of Cadwaller.
Tyber has never been all that impressed with dragons. He's too busy with more important things, like trying to keep his family fed. But when he's caught stealing, he's presented with a choice: join the King's Royal Academy of Dragon Riders or go to prison. Which would you choose, right? The king's war had taken a turn for the worse and new recruits are desperately needed. So much so that a bonus is offered to those who complete the first round of training. At least joining the academy would be a way for Tyber to help his family. It sounds like a golden opportunity, but first Tyber must face the mysteries of the academy, endure its trials, and learn to serve a king he blames for his family's poverty. None of these tasks, however, will be as difficult as winning the loyalty of a young dragon named Rius and accepting the wisdom of dragons.
Chenna, a skilled hunter, has never had her head in the clouds, but when a dragon with a grisly cargo drops out of the sky and lands at her feet, in the clouds is exactly where she finds herself. Helping the dragon return home seems like a welcome distraction from the recent loss of her sister and an unwanted betrothal offer. After swearing not to bind herself to the saddle, Chenna leaves her beloved forest behind and sets off for a destination known only to the dragon. Along the way, they cross paths with a band of dragon riders who are not what they seem, and Chenna finds herself the hunted instead of the hunter. As their route takes her farther from home and closer to the heart of danger, Chenna teams up with a wounded young man and former dragon rider to help her fulfill a promise. But with a band of rogues behind her, the Queen's horde ahead of her, and a dragon driven to carry her to the edge of the world she knows, Chenna must take all the skills of a life in the forest and apply them to the sky, only to find that any promise worth keeping will require sacrifice.
Peace has come to Cadwaller, but it hasn't quite reached Tyber in the heart of the kingdom. His family is on the front line. His sister is a dragon rider in the western garrison. And word of whether they survived the final battle has yet to reach him as he continues his studies at the King's Royal Academy of Dragon Riders. Better than sending a letter, Tyber and his classmates are presented a chance to escort a member of the royal family to Aerona. There, the war will officially be brought to an end, and Tyber can see his family and know who among them survived the fighting season. But he's not the only one who wants the honor of being a royal escort. Tyber and his fellow recruits must pool their individual talents and abilities in a series of competitions to prove they are the most worthy of the kingdom's honor and advance on to the final round of study.
Life never announces its trials. On the day that Tyber and his friends pass the first formal trial at His Majesty's Academy of Royal Dragon Riders, Tyber learns that his family is moving to the other side of the kingdom in search of a better future. Tyber knows in his heart he could never leave his dragon Rius behind, even to go with his family. Add in a fight with his trouble-making friend, Ren, and Tyber's celebration is cut short. As the second trial gets underway with mysterious orders from the headmaster, Tyber risks his life and his dragon to save the snarky Ren. Together, they discover how dragons settle their differences.
Famine grips the heart of the Cadwaller kingdom, but relief waits at the border. A caravan loaded with food and goods needs an escort. That assignment falls upon Tyber and Rius and the rest of their horde. The recruits of the King's Royal Academy of Dragon Riders believe themselves ready to defend the caravan, but they will find that the people of the mother city aren't the only ones desperate for supplies. The final trial is ahead of them. But on the road home waits a lesson that can't be taught inside the grounds of any academy.
