Die hier vorliegende Neufassung des wichtigsten Werks von David Hume baut nach wie vor auf der unübertroffenen Übersetzung von Theodor Lipps (1851 - 1914) auf. Die umfangreichen Erläuterungen im Fußnotenapparat und das vollkommen neu entwickelte Stichwortverzeichnis stellen eine zusätzlich wertvolle Hilfe für jeden Leser dar, egal ob er zum ersten Male mit Humes Gedanken in Kontakt kommt oder als Philosoph ständig auf Hume zurückgreift und eine entsprechend verlässliche Textausgabe benötigt. Der Text der ursprünglichen Übersetzung wurde für diese Ausgabe stilistisch und lexikalisch, aber auch grammatisch und orthografisch auf den neuesten Stand gebracht. Unter anderem erfolgte eine Umstellung des gesamten Textes auf die neue deutsche Rechtschreibung. All dies erhöht dessen Lesbarkeit deutlich. Gleichwohl geschah die Modernisierung sehr behutsam, so dass die Übersetzung den Leser weiterhin so nah an das Humesche Gedankengut heranbringt, wie es bislang nur die Lipps¿sche Übersetzung vermag.
