Twelve discussion Bible studies suitable for small groups or individual use, that cover the whole of Genesis, with a biblical theological approach, based on the 1984 NIV. Each study takes approximately 1 hour for a small group or when used as individual study material. For larger groups, allow a longer time. The Bible passages may be read outside a group context (for 'homework') to save time when all together. Each chapter gives background, states the aims of the study, suggests ice-breakers, consists mainly of questions for groups discussion, has space for writing answers, identifies applications, and also has a range of possible answers to the questions.Suitable background reading would include 'According to Plan' by Graeme Goldsworthy, IVP, 1991 and "God's Big Picture' by Vaughan Roberts, IVP, 2003. There is also a reading list that includes commentaries on Genesis. Part I - 'The Way Down' covers Genesis chapters 1 to 11.Part II - 'The Way Up' covers Genesis chapter 12 to 50.This set of studies come from the author of 'Covenants for Evangelicals', also available from Amazon in Kindle format, black and white paperback, and full colour paperback with larger print. These studies were tested on the Ashford Congregational Church #1 Home Group (the best; thanks guys) back in 2008. Some were shocked at the content of Genesis! We all heard God speaking through this part of his precious word, the Bible. Furthermore, we discovered how understanding Genesis is fundamental to understanding the whole Bible. The practical applications included in each study should benefit not only individual Christians, but churches, parents and whole families. Studies are based on the NIV 2011 translation with reference to the original language, but will work just as well with other Bible translations. These later psalms in Book V of the Psalter are rarely studied, but contain a wealth of wisdom, theology and worship. Each study should take less than an hour unless the group is large. Studies include appropriate songs to sing, questions for the group to discuss, and sufficient background information and illustrations to allow the group leader to run stimulating, informative and God-centred Bible studies. Many of the questions are practical applications, i.e. 'What should we do or believe now that we understand this psalm better? 'The Songs of Ascent are psalms 120 to 134. They are thought be associated with the old covenant triannual pilgrimages up to Jerusalem. Sometimes, psalms 120 to 136 are known collectively as the Great Hallel; sometimes, just Psalm 136 on its own is also called the Great Hallel because of its refrain, 'His love endures for ever'. The Great Hallel is followed by the agonising exilic psalm, 137, 'By the rivers of Babylon'. Finally, there is a set of psalms known as the 'Eight Last Davidic Psalms', 138 to 145. Buy one copy for each small group member to give each of them a copy to write notes in and keep. This encourages regular attendance at meetings!
