This book covers the crucial aspects of theoretical and experimental approaches for Si-based spintronic materials. The theory parts emphasize on two first-principles methods - the GW method to improve the insulating gaps of the half metals which are a class of materials ideal for spintronic applications, and the linear response theory to calculate electric and magnetic susceptibilities. Three growth methods for doping transition metal elements in alloy and layered forms in Si will be focused on. Also three methods for characterization will be presented emphasizing on how to interpret experimental results. Finally, recent progress made in the Si-based spintronic materials will be discussed. This book is intended for researchers and graduate students who are interested in designing and growing new spintronic materials, in particular, silicon-based.

As the pace of change in the workplace continues to accelerate, individuals are under more pressure to learn new things than ever before. While most people realize they have more to learn, many have trouble translating that anxious need into purposeful action. Managing Your Own Learning demonstrates how to analyze previous learning, design an action plan for future learning, expand opportunities for learning, and use libraries and the Internet effectively to become a lifelong learner. James and Adelaide Davis detail seven major ways of learning: learning new skills, learning from presentations, learning to think, learning to solve problems and make decisions, learning in groups, learning through virtual realities, and learning from experience. They also provide useful guidelines for maximizing results by becoming an effective, active participant in learning. They explain, for example, how learning in a group can be enhanced by knowing how a group works and considering factors such as group size, cohesion, task and process behavior, and participant roles, as well as the things that can go wrong in groups, such as conflict and apathy. For each of the seven ways of learning, the authors tell what is unique about it, how learning actually takes place, and how it can be augmented in each situation. They reveal how the theory behind each way of learning originated, what researchers have learned about it, and what the individual's role is as a participant. And at the end of each chapter, they include a list of ten things that anyone can do to get the most from that particular type of learning. No matter what our previous experiences with learning may have been, we all must become self-directed learners if we are to succeed in this new era. Managing Your Own Learning provides step-by-step, proven advice on how to succeed in the 21st century workplace by becoming a proactive, goal-directed, perpetual learner.

This book is about a recently developed class of strategies, known as the fence methods, which fits particularly well in non-conventional and complex model selection problems with practical considerations. The idea involves a procedure to isolate a subgroup of what are known as correct models, of which the optimal model is a member. This is accomplished by constructing a statistical fence, or barrier, to carefully eliminate incorrect models. Once the fence is constructed, the optimal model is selected from amongst those within the fence according to a criterion which can be made flexible. In particular, the criterion of optimality can incorporate consideration of practical interest, thus making model selection a real life practice.Furthermore, this book introduces a data-driven approach, called adaptive fence, which can be used in a wide range of problems involving determination of tuning parameters, or constants. Instead of relying on asymptotic theory, the fence focuses on finite-sample performance, and computation. Such features are particularly suitable to statistics in the new era.

This volume provides a detailed treatment of half-metallic materials and their properties from both an experimental and theoretical point of view. It discusses the methods used to understand and predict the properties of half-metals and the gamut of other materials amenable to these techniques. It also offers an expansive bibliography to facilitate further and deeper research. This book provides the precise definitions of all key terminology used in the vast and varied literature. This is the first comprehensive monograph on the subject and will serve as a starting point for graduate students and senior researchers who wish to enter the field. This book will also be an invaluable reference to those already working in the area of half-metallic materials.
