Early Christians were steadfast in their faith, to the point of no return. Courage, love for their one true God, and humility led them into horrific tortures and, finally, martyrdom whether rich or poor, of high status or young or old.St. Barbara the great holy martyr, was tortured for the love of Christ as well. She was struck with rawhide and had her wounds rubbed with a hair cloth to increase her pain among other horrifying tortures. As a true Christian though, and with her unsurpassable faith, she withstood all of her sufferings and came to her martyrdom.

The sufferings and hardships of the Greeks during those years of slavery under ottoman rule were continuous, many, and inconceivable. Among the new martyrs who fought during the Turkish rule to consolidate the Christian faith, demonstrating exceptional bravery and unshakable faith, is the Holy New Martyr Manuel from Sfakia, Crete, who was martyred for Christ on the island of Chios on March 15, 1792.
