Amongst them was John Sevier, originally Xavier from France, his father and uncle stowed away on board a ship and came to the Americas before the Revolution. John Sevier became a leading member of the new westward movement and in 1784 petitioned Congress to create the State of Franklin out of property in western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee.

From there, the family moved to Baileyton, Tennessee with her parents and siblings; named after the brother of Thomas Bailey, Claudius. In the years that followed the family spread southward and westward to all the states across the nation.
