Donald Yates, a U.S. 20-year military veteran, has released another fine military periodical short read. Yates, the author of over 15 military history pictorials, has released his latest book, The American Paratrooper. Yates, who earlier published Life of the USS Midway, The Life of the USS Coral Sea and the Life of the USS Kitty Hawk, takes the reader on a tour of the paratrooper's life in the 20th century and beyond. The American Paratrooper displays the life of U.S. Army paratroopers with over 50 photos and accompanied citations, some never before published. The book is heavily filled with World War II paratrooper material as that war by far involved the most paratroopers ever. After the World War 2 section you'll see many photos from large-scale military training operations and a chapter showing African Americans from the 555th Parachute Regiment, who relegated to fighting fires instead of combat, doing a heroic job accomplishing their assigned mission. This book would be an excellent addition to any history buffs' library or a great gift for the same for patriotic Americans wishing to learn about their military.

Donald Yates, a U.S. 20-year military veteran, has released another fine military periodical short read. Yates, the author of over 15 military history pictorials, has released his latest book, The Life of the USS Kitty Hawk. Yates, who earlier published The Life of the USS Midway and The Life of the USS Coral Sea, takes the reader on a decade-by-decade tour of Kitty Hawk's history. The Kitty Hawk was a very busy ship throughout its lifetime. After commissioning in early 1961, Kitty Hawk was thrust into combat and did its duty well during the 24-hour-a-day bombing of North Vietnam. The ship would ultimately earn a Vietnam Service medal with 16 stars, a Sea Service Deployment ribbon with 17 stars, a Navy/Marine Corps Overseas Service Ribbon with nine stars, and a Presidential Unit Citation. This book will be an excellent addition to any military history buff's library or a fine gift to a veteran sailor who served on the USS Kitty Hawk.

Don Yates enrolled as a Peace Corps Volunteer after responding to the challenge then-President John F. Kennedy issued to young Americans to 'ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.' From compiling over 500 pages of a diary kept while he worked as an educator and community developer in the Philippine Islands on the southern island of Jolo in the Sulu Archipelago, he gleaned over 25 stories, or episodes, depicting highlights of his life there along with reflections of local culture. Many episodes, such as the prologue entitled Culture Shock, depict a young man's orientation and involvement in a way of life very different from his upbringing as an American. Complete with photographs from his two-year tour of duty, Don has captured the essence of an area of the world rarely seen or visited by outsiders while sharing how he grew as a young man in a foreign land.
