Initially composed by Poe as a public lecture towards the end his career and considered by him the culmination of all his life's work, Eureka is an extended treatise about the creation, existence and the ultimate end of the world.
Edgar Allan Poe's extraordinary Gothic tales are classics of horror fiction, and created many of the conventions which still dominate the genre of detective fiction. This selection places the most popular against travel narrative, essays, and political satires.

"Originally published over a hundred years ago, the fifteen stories in this anthology represent some of the great classics of ghost and terror fiction ... These British and American tales span eight decades of literary history, and they present a terrifying collection of ghosts, monsters, and monstrous men."--Back cover.
Decades before the British super-sleuth Sherlock Holmes appeared on the scene, American author Edgar Allan Poe created the first detective story in a remarkable trilogy of short stories featuring genius French criminologist C. Auguste Dupin. The Murders in the Rue Morgue and its sequel The Mystery of Marie Roget represent the beginning of crime fiction and each story has been hailed as a masterpiece. In 'Morgue' the Parisian detective investigates the savage murder of a mother and daughter. In the follow-up, Dupin is on the hunt of a killer in a case based on the true story of Mary Rogers, a saleswoman at a cigar store in Manhattan whose body was found floating in the Hudson River in 1841. The Purloined Letter first appeared in The Gift: A Christmas and New Year's Present for 1845, in December, 1844. Poe earned $12 for its first printing. It is now considered one of the greatest mystery short stories ever written.
All the short stories by Edgar Allan Poe collected in one volume.
The importance of Edgar Allan Poe to literary history can hardly be exaggerated; his genius and originality, both in terms of language and technique, influenced the French Symbolists of the late nineteenth century and thus changed the course of modern literature. Although chiefly remembered for his short stories, poetry was his first love, and this magnificently decorated edition presents Poe's complete poems in addition to his most important critical essays on poetry. Featuring such immortal works as "The Raven," "Annabel Lee," and "The Bells," this volume meticulously re-creates the famed 1900 Endymion edition, a series comprising the works of Robert Browning, Keats, and other luminaries. Poe's dark obsessions and fascination with the supernatural find a perfect match in the powerful and haunting imagery of artist W. Heath Robinson, whose headpieces, tailpieces, decorated titles, and other illustrations appear throughout the book. www.doverpublications.com
