In this series finale (for now), Dan and company head to the old IU campus in Bloomington to rescue a scientist who had been isolated in a vault-like underground bunker since the beginning. Along with his newly found paramilitary friends, Mosin may hold the key to stopping the Soul Eater for good.Back at the colony, Jeff and the others manage to communicate with their new guest, who tells them the truth about their enemy. His shocking revelations turn the tale upside down, and reveal that the Soul Eater's nature is even more mysterious than they had believed. Unfortunately, the excursion into the Soul Eater's realm is a one-way trip.
As Dan begins adjusting to life in the new colony, it is discovered that Jeff and his crew have lost contact with Drew, Royce and Cliff. Their hastily-assembled rescue team, which includes an old friend Dan thought was dead, sets out to find out what happened. Little does Dan know, two new friends have traveled back to our universe with him, but find themselves in the middle of an alien invasion.As Dan and friends travel back to Brown County, they come in contact with a long-isolated physicist who may hold the answers to closing the portal for good, preventing the Soul Eater from destroying our universe as we know it. His dreams introduce him to an ancient force for good that may give him the power to do so.
After a routine supply run ends in tragedy, Dan begins to question his skills as leader. Seeking to clear his head, he wanders off on his own. He awakens in what seems to be a peaceful setting, but is soon reminded of the state of the world when he is reacquainted with an old "friend". Dan and his group suddenly find themselves on the radar of another group; one whose intentions and lifestyle are a danger to all who stand in their way. In order to keep his friends safe, Dan must lead an expedition to retrieve three of them from the grasp of this new enemy. He will soon discover that the mutant horrors that walk the earth are not the only things to fear. Sometimes the worst monsters are other survivors.
The group returns home to find that Toby has gone missing. Thinking he went out to look for his mother, Dan orders a search of the area. Not far away, an explosion suddenly lights up the frozen forest, and the group finds the smoldering debris of a chopper crash, and two survivors. When Toby awakens, he discovers that his frightening rescuer is a bizarre and accentric oddity with a surreal collection of pets. Unsure of the man's intentions, Toby plays along until he can find a way to escape and rejoin his friends. Meanwhile, in the dark and macabre underground zoo, the ultimate lifeform begins to stir in its sleep. Its presence is a bane to all life around it, and even its captor fears its dark and vile nature.
After striking out on their own once again, the boys make a stop to get some well-earned leisure time. But, unknown to them, their detour will take them back to a familiar place where a demented game master plots to torture their very minds and souls...and, possibly, reality itself.
After Max mysteriously disappears chasing a strange creature, Dan and Jake go in search of him. But, the new companion is baffled by things that the group has already seen.
