Cette statue fut inaugurée par le président Émile Combes dans le tumulte soulevé par la croisade qu'il prêchait contre les Congrégations tenues pour coupables, non sans raison, d'avoir alimenté de diverses façons les atroces rivalités qui marquèrent la révolution dreyfusienne.
