Der Neapolitaner Giambattista Basile (1575/1632) war ein italienischer Schriftsteller und Höfling verschiedener Fürsten. Er verfasste Gedichte sowie Theaterstücke und gilt durch sein Hauptwerk Il Pentamerone als Europas erster großer Märchenerzähler. Aus dem Buch: "Es war nämlich einmal ein König von Buschtal, welcher eine Tochter namens Zoza hatte, die man gleich einem zweiten Zoroaster oder Heraklit niemals lachen sah, weswegen der traurige Vater, der keine andere Freude auf Erden besaß als dieses sein einziges Kind, nichts unversucht ließ, um ihren Trübsinn zu verbannen, und um sie aufzuheitern, bald Seiltänzer, bald Reifenspringer, bald Gaukler, bald Hanswürste, bald Taschenspieler, bald starke Herkulesse, bald Hunde, welche Kunststücke machten, bald Esel, die aus Gläsern tranken, bald Tänzer, bald das, bald jenes kommen ließ..."
