Nicolai Hartmann (1882-1950), einer der bedeutendsten Philosophen des 20. Jahrhunderts, zeichnet das Bemühen um eine Rekonstruktion der philosophischen Tradition in der Auseinandersetzung mit den Wissenschaften aus. Er hat, um diesen Gedanken zu unterstreichen, das Wort "systematische Philosophie" geprägt. Die Praxis systematischen Philosophierens wird erstmals in der hier in kommtierter Fassung vorgelegten Auswahl der "Cirkel-Protokolle" fassbar. Es handelt sich um das Dokument eines Disputierkreises, den Hartmann von 1920 bis 1950 geleitet hat. Hartmann hat in seiner Marburger, Kölner, Berliner und Göttinger Zeit mit einem wechselnden Kreis von persönlich eingeladenen Studenten, Studentinnen und älteren Schülern zu verschiedenen philosophischen Themen und Problemen Gespräche geführt. Aufgrund ihrer dialogischen Form geben die im Nachlass Hartmanns befindlichen Cirkelprotokolle einen unvergleichlichen Einblick in die geistige Kultur des 20. Jahrhunderts.

This textbook includes important texts by Hartmann, some of them virtually inaccessible before, with a concise introduction to the central themes in Hartmann's thought. There has been a recent renaissance of interest in his "e;new ontology"e;both as systematic theory and in philosophical anthropology. This text serves as an ideal introduction to Hartmann and as a supplement in courses on metaphysics, anthropology, and 20th century philosophy.

Using Documents presents an interdisciplinary theoretical discussion of human communication with documents in and after the "Gutenberg galaxy." Interdisciplinarity is taken seriously: looking back on existing work, texts on written communication by the philosopher and sociologist Georg Simmel and by an interdisciplinary French group of authors under the pseudonym Roger T. Pédauque are taken as a starting point and presented afresh (in part for the first time for an English-speaking audience). A look ahead to the future is attempted in contributions from an-again interdisciplinary-group of cultural scientists and cultural technologists who gathered at the University of Wuppertal in October 2019. Whereas the modeling (including technical modeling) of documents has to date largely been limited to the description of output forms and specific content, the foundations are laid here for including documents' contexts of use in models that are grounded in cultural theory. In this way, a hitherto largely unexplored intersection between media science and media technology is also investigated.

Hartung works out both the linguistic and philosophy of language setting as well as socio-political and cultural implications of the radical critique of language developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries by philosophers as diverse as Steinthal, Cohen, Simmel or Cassirer. He argues that the theories pleaded for a plurality of linguistic and cultural forms as well as for a new logic beyond the traditional nature/culture partition.
