Gregory Bateson was a philosopher, anthropologist, photographer, naturalist and poet, as well as the husband and collaborator of Margaret Mead. This anthology of his major work contains a foreword by his daughter Mary Katherine Bateson.

In 31 posthumously collected lectures and writings, anthropologist, systems thinker and cyberneticist Gregory Bateson (1904-1980) addresses questions of ecology, mind, consciousness, linguistics, evolution and communication. His masterly synthesis stresses the need to re-establish a "sacred unity" between the human mind and the biosphere.

"Naven" is the name of a peculiar ritual practiced by Iatmul, a head-hunting tribe of New Guinea. The ceremony is performed to congratulate members of the tribe upon the completion of notable accomplishments, among which homicide ranks highest.

This is a re-issue of Gregory Bateson's and Mary Catherine Bateson's work, which has been out of print for the past 20 years, 2004 is the G. Bateson centennial and this work, in collaboration with his daughter, Mary Catherine Bateson, sets out Bateson's natural history of the relationship between ideas.
