Die 25. Auflage stellt einen Paradigmenwechsel in der Bearbeitung der Paulschen Grammatik dar. Es wird versucht, durch vorsichtigen Rckschnitt, durch Ausdnnung und moderate Modernisierung den Band wieder benutzerfreundlich zu gestalten, so dass auch Studierende ohne spezielle sprachhistorische Vorkenntnisse wieder in der Lage sind, die Grammatik zu verstehen. Gegenber der 23./24. Aufl. besteht der groe Vorteil, dass parallel zu den Arbeiten an dieser Auflage die Arbeiten zu einer neuen groen wissenschaftlichen Grammatik auf der Basis mhd. Handschriften fortschreiten. So konnte nicht nur Inhaltliches korrigiert werden, sondern der Band konnte auch um Einiges, das sich in der groen Grammatik finden wird, entlastet werden. Die Eingrifftiefe ist je nach Kapitel und Paragraph unterschiedlich. In der Formenlehre wurde insbesondere die Deklination der Substantive grndlich revidiert. In der Lautlehre wurde wenigstens im Bereich des Konsonantismus, stellenweise auch im Vokalismus, damit begonnen, die schreibsprachlichen Verhltnisse des in Handschriften und Urkunden berlieferten Mhd. genauer zu beschreiben als bisher. Weitergehend neu bearbeitet wurde das Kapitel ber Unterschiede der mhd. Landschaftssprachen. Auch der Syntaxteil unterscheidet sich erheblich von den entsprechenden Teilen der vorangegangenen Auflagen. Ganz oder fast ganz neu sind der Abschnitt ber die Struktur der Nominalphrase, der Beginn des Kapitels zu den Satzarten sowie die Kapitel zur Wortstellung und zu den komplexen Stzen.

Nach ber 100 Jahren seit dem Erscheinen gehrt Pauls Buch "e;Prinzipien der Sprachgeschichte"e; (1. Auflage 1880) nach wie vor zu den Standardwerken der Sprachwissenschaft.

Das Lebenswerk Hermann Pauls (1846-1921) liegt in seinen "e;Prinzipien der Sprachgeschichte"e;, in seinem "e;Deutschen Worterbuch"e; und seiner mehrbandigen "e;Deutschen Grammatik"e; vor. Diese Arbeiten werden vorbereitet u.a. durch Pauls Munchener Akademieabhandlungen; uberdies zieht Paul am Ende in zwei Spatschriften ein Fazit. Daruber hinaus mischt er sich ein: mit Reden uber Deutsche Philologie und ihren Stellenwert im Leben der Nation und uber das Universitatsstudium, zudem mit Stellungnahmen zur Rechtschreibung und Rechtlautung. Der Band versammelt diese pragnanten und heute noch aktuellen Schriften und Reden, zusammen mit einem Kapitel zur Biographie Pauls (mit ausgewahlten Nachrufen und Briefen) und einer vollstandigen Bibliographie seiner Schriften und der Sekundarliteratur (in Auswahl). Einfuhrung und Kommentare der Herausgeber erschlieen den Band, der der lebhaften 'Paul-Philologie' neue Anstoe geben soll.
