Ferragus est un roman d'Honoré de Balzac paru en 1833 dans la Revue de Paris, édité en 1834 chez madame Charles-Béchet.C'est le premier volet de l'Histoire des Treize qui regroupe Ferragus, La Duchesse de Langeais et La Fille aux yeux d'or. L'ensemble fait partie des Scènes de la vie parisienne, Études de moeurs, de La Comédie humaine. Le titre complet de l'ouvrage, dédié à Hector Berlioz à partir de l'édition Furne de 1843, était Ferragus, chef des Dévorants. Une contrefaçon belge publiée en 1833 chez Mélina annonçait déjà le premier épisode d'un ensemble. Résumé : Une femme, généreuse et belle comme un ange, soupçonnée d'adultère ; un jeune officier qui se lance dans la plus vaine et maladroite des enquêtes ; un agent de change égaré dans les affres de la passion ; une somme d'argent qu'on n'explique pas ; une société secrète (les Dévorants) dont les membres entendent exercer l'absolutisme de leur bon plaisir ; des duels, des assassinats, des suicides ; une évocation de Vidocq ; le tout sur un fond de ville monstre - Paris - gigantesque théâtre des fièvres de la Restauration : tout Balzac est déjà dans Ferragus qui apparaît comme l'une des étapes essentielles du grand oeuvre, l'un des romans fondateurs de ce qui deviendra La Comédie humaine
