The Scarlet Plague is a post-apocalyptic tale set in 2073, sixty years after an uncontrollable epidemic, the Red Death, has depopulated the planet. James Howard Smith is one of the few survivors of the pre-plague era left alive in the San Francisco area, and he travels with his grandsons Edwin, Hoo-Hoo, and Hare-Lip, who live as primeval hunter-gatherers in a heavily depopulated world. Smith, whom they call "Granser", decides to tell them the story of the disease alternately referred to as scarlet plague, scarlet death, or red death. Jack London (1876-1916) was an American novelist, journalist, and social activist. His amazing life experience also includes being an oyster pirate, railroad hobo, gold prospector, sailor, war correspondent and much more. Orwell believed that Jack London's understanding of contemporary politics had made him a better prophet "than many better-informed and more logical thinkers." Jack London (1876-1916) was an American novelist, journalist, and social activist. London was part of the radical literary group "The Crowd" in San Francisco and a passionate advocate of unionization, socialism, and the rights of workers. He wrote several powerful works dealing with these topics, such as his dystopian novel The Iron Heel, his non-fiction exposé The People of the Abyss, and The War of the Classes. The Call of the Wild is a novel by American writer Jack London. The plot concerns a previously domesticated and even somewhat pampered dog named Buck, whose primordial instincts return after a series of events finds him serving as a sled dog in the treacherous, frigid Yukon during the days of the 19th century Klondike Gold Rushes.Published in 1903, The Call of the Wild is one of London's most-read books, and it is generally considered one of his best. Because the protagonist is a dog, it is sometimes classified as a juvenile novel, suitable for children, but it is dark in tone and contains numerous scenes of cruelty and violence.London followed the book in 1906 with White Fang, a companion novel with many similar plot elements and themes as The Call of the Wild, although following a mirror image plot in which a wild wolf becomes civilized by a mining expert from San Francisco named Weedon Scott.

Em 1910, Jack London, publicava este conto baseado na primeira década do século XX, num imaginário de um novo método de guerra que mais tarde viria a surgir, ainda que sem as dimensões que London descreveu através desta sua ficção científica especulativa com base histórica da época. Depois da Guerra Rússia-Japão, o Japão entra em conflito com a China tentando ocupá-la, London descreve então a expulsão dos japoneses da China no decurso do furioso despertar do país da Grande Muralha; anos depois a China revela seus interesses imperiais e ocupa diversos países através da imigração em massa, terminando a história num cenário quase apocalíptico de confronto entre a China e as restantes nações do mundo.Este conto, com título original 'The Unparalled Invasion' (1910), pode, nos padrões de hoje, ter algumas interpretações de cariz xenófobo, por outro lado, apesar de todo um cenário hediondo que caracteriza a catarse deste conto (short-story), London demonstra cruelmente o que pode derivar de uma guerra em grande escala num mundo tecnologicamente avançado - a exemplo do que aconteceria quatro anos depois da publicação deste conto com o início da Primeira Guerra Mundial -, pelo que deveremos ter em conta o ativismo social de Jack London e, possivelmente, atentar antes às características da ânsia que revela pelo desenvolvimento intelectual e pelo pacifismo ao invés dos caminhos da guerra que os inimigos trilham independentemente da sua origem.
