La inspiracion.Es un error el figurarse que los grandes pensamientos son hijos del discurso; este, bien empleado, sirve algun tanto para enseñar, pero poco para inventar. Casi todo lo que el mundo admira de mas feliz, grande y sorprendente, es debido á la inspiracion; á esta luz instantánea que brilla de repente en el entendimiento del hombre, sin que él mismo sepa de donde le viene. Inspiracion la apellido, y con mucha propiedad, porque no cabe nombre mas adaptado para explicar este admirable fenómeno.Está un matemático dando vueltas á un intrincado problema; se ha hecho cargo de todos los datos, nada le queda que practicar de lo que para semejantes casos está prevenido. La resolucion no se encuentra; se han tanteado varios planteos, y á nada conducen. Se han tomado al acaso diferentes cantidades, por si se da en el blanco; todo es inútil. La cabeza está fatigada; la pluma descansa sobre el papel, nada escribe. La atencion del calculador está como adormecida de puro fija; casi no sabe si piensa. Cansado de forcejear por abrir una puerta tan bien cerrada, parece que ha desistido de su empeño, y que se ha sentado en el umbral aguardando si alguien abrirá por la parte de adentro.Ya lo veo, exclama de repente,esto es!.... y cual otro Arquimédes, sin saber lo que le sucede, saltaria del baño y echaria á correr gritando:Lo he encontrado!..... Lo he encontrado!....
La sensacion, considerada en sí, es una mera afeccion interior; pero va casi siempre acompañada de un juicio mas ó menos explícito, mas ó menos notado por el mismo que siente y juzga.Veo dos molduras á una distancia conveniente: no descubro entre ellas ninguna diferencia. Aquí hay dos cosas.1ª. Esa afeccion interior, ó apellídese como se quiera, que llamamos ver. En cuanto á esto, no me cabe ni puede caberme duda. Podré estar dispierto ó dormido, en sano juicio, ó demente; podrán ser las molduras semejantes ó desemejantes, y hasta existir ó no existir; pero en cualquiera de dichas suposiciones, dentro de mí pasa esta representacion que llamo ver las molduras.2ª. Juzgo que en realidad, á mas de la afeccion que experimento, existen las dos molduras, están colocadas en frente de mí, y son ambas de relieve. En esto cabe error: por ejemplo, si duermo, si deliro; si en vez de tenerlas delante, las tengo á la espalda, y me hace ilusion un espejo que me las refleja; si no hay mas que un papel colocado detras de un vidrio cuya construccion es á propósito para que reciba mi retina la misma impresion que con la presencia del objeto; ó si no habiendo ninguna de dichas ilusiones, un pintor hábil ha dado al lienzo la misma apariencia que si fueran de relieve; ó siendo la una de perspectiva, no lo es la otra.
