Der württembergische Theologe Johann Albrecht Bengel (1687-1752) hat die Kirchen- und Theologiegeschichte nachhaltig beeinflusst durch seine textkritische Arbeit am griechischen Neuen Testament sowie Auslegungen, die wissenschaftliche Arbeit mit erbaulichen Anmerkungen verbinden. Dazu gehört auch Bengels gescheiterter Versuch, die Ereignisse der Heilsgeschichte zu berechnen.Die auf mehrere Bände angelegte Edition seiner über 3.100 Stücke umfassenden Korrespondenz bietet die Briefe als Volltext oder ausführliche Inhaltsangabe. Fremdsprachige Schreiben werden übersetzt. Der erläuternde Apparat liefert Informationen zu genannten Personen, Sachbezügen und Buchtiteln. Register der Bibelstellen, Personen und Orte sind jedem Band beigegeben.Auf den frühen Briefwechsel (Bd. 1, 1707-1722) und die Korrespondenz der mittleren Denkendorfer Jahre (Bd. 2, 1723-1731) folgen in Band 3 die Briefe aus Bengels später Denkendorfer Zeit (1732-1741).
